What this check tells you, and what it can't

DVSA's answer for the car. DVSA keeps a flag for whether a vehicle has an outstanding safety recall. Where it says yes, we say so first. Where it doesn't know — which is common — we say that too, rather than letting it read as a clean result.

Every recall issued for the model. DVSA publishes each recall with the models and build dates it covers. We list the ones for the car's model around its build year, newest first.

Not which chassis numbers are affected. A recall covers a range of VINs that only the manufacturer holds. For a definitive answer for one car, check its VIN on GOV.UK.

Recalls and common problems by model

Every recall DVSA lists for the UK's most-searched models since 2012, generation by generation, alongside the faults the makers have acknowledged.

Common questions

How do I check if my car has a recall?

Enter the registration above. We show DVSA's record of whether the car has an outstanding recall, and every recall issued for its model around its build date. For a definitive answer for one car, check its VIN — printed on the V5C logbook — on GOV.UK's vehicle recall checker, or ask a franchised dealer for the make.

What does it mean if the recall status is unknown?

DVSA doesn't hold a per-car recall answer for many vehicles. Unknown is the commonest result, and it does not mean the car has no recall. Check the VIN on GOV.UK and compare it with the recalls issued for the model.

Why are recalls listed for my model that may not apply to my car?

A recall covers a range of chassis numbers built over a period, not every car of the model. We list what DVSA has issued for the model around your car's build date; whether one applies to your car depends on its VIN.

Do I have to pay for recall work?

No. Safety recall work is carried out free of charge by the manufacturer's franchised dealers, whoever owns the car now.

Is this the DVLA recall check?

Recalls are run by the manufacturers and DVSA, not DVLA. We read the car's details from DVLA and its recall flag from DVSA, both free, and DVSA's published recall list. Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0; we are not affiliated with DVLA or DVSA.

Does a service history check show recall work?

A service history check returns the manufacturer's own dealership records for a car — what was done, when and at what mileage. Recall work is carried out by those dealers, so it is worth checking the records of a car you are buying. There is no charge if we find nothing.
