Recall: engine oil separator may be damaged and leak
Some engines were assembled with an oil separator that had been damaged beforehand and can leak oil. Dealers inspect it and replace it if it is damaged or leaking.
Applies to: Ford Fiesta, Puma, Focus and Kuga built February 2020 to May 2022
The recall notice does not name the engine and covers fewer than 10,000 cars; a Ford dealer can check by VIN.
- Recall · FordEmissions, DPF & AdBlue
Recall: diesel particulate filter can crack
On some diesel models the particulate filter (DPF) can crack. Ford updates the engine software to prevent it and tests the filter, replacing any that have already cracked.
Applies to: Some diesel Ford Focus Mk4, Kuga Mk3, Mondeo, S-Max, Galaxy and EcoSport (DVSA lists 2018–2022 model years)
Only some diesels — the recall covers a few thousand vehicles across these models and does not name the engine. A Ford dealer can check by VIN.

Recall: engine wiring loom can chafe on the gearbox
On some early Focus Mk4s the engine wiring loom can rub against a stud or bolt on the gearbox housing and be damaged. Ford recalled cars three times to reroute and secure the loom, replace the stud with a bolt and repair any damage, including cars where an earlier repair used the wrong stud.
Applies to: Ford Focus Mk4 built March 2018 to March 2020

If it has the Ford 1.0 / 1.5 / 1.6 EcoBoost petrol (6-speed manual): Recall: clutch pressure plate can fracture (EcoBoost manuals)
On 1.0, 1.5 and 1.6 EcoBoost petrol cars with the 6-speed manual gearbox, repeated clutch slip can overheat the pressure plate until it fractures. Owners notice a burning-clutch smell and a loss of performance; in extreme cases a bang from the gearbox and debris that can start an under-bonnet fire. The recall adds software that warns the driver and cuts power when the clutch is slipping, or fits a revised clutch on cars without stop-start.
Applies to: Ford Focus, C-Max, Kuga, Mondeo, S-Max, Galaxy and Transit Connect with a 1.0, 1.5 or 1.6 EcoBoost petrol engine and 6-speed manual gearbox, built 2009–2018
Only the turbocharged EcoBoost engines with the 6-speed manual gearbox. DVLA records neither the gearbox nor whether a 1.0 or 1.6 petrol is turbocharged, so this also shows for non-turbo Ti-VCT petrols and automatics.

If it has the Ford 2.0 EcoBlue diesel: 2.0 EcoBlue: faulty batch of fuel injectors replaced by Ford
A batch of fuel injectors fitted to 2.0 EcoBlue diesels in 2019 had a coating problem that could block them. Symptoms are rough running, misfires, poor idle, high fuel use and eventually limp-home mode. Ford ran a field service action to replace the injectors free of charge, whether or not they had failed; check the van or car has had the work done.
Applies to: Ford 2.0 EcoBlue diesel built 25 February to 13 September 2019 — mainly Transit, Transit Custom and Ranger, with some Focus, Mondeo, S-Max, Galaxy and Edge
Only vehicles built between late February and mid-September 2019; a Ford dealer can check by VIN.

Electrical glitches and warning lights that come on for no reason
Owners report niggling electrical faults on this Focus, especially with the infotainment system and dashboard warning lights appearing without a fault behind them. Car Mechanics links spurious warning lights to a weak 12V battery, so test the battery first; a car left standing should be kept on a trickle charger.
Applies to: Ford Focus Mk4 (2018–2025)
- Reported by 2 publishersGearbox
Automatic gearbox: jerky changes and gear-selection faults
Owners report jerky automatic gearboxes on this Focus, and Car Mechanics notes problems with gear selection and vibration on the dual-clutch automatic. On a test drive the automatic should pull away and change gear smoothly, without shunts or shudder.
Applies to: Ford Focus Mk4 (2018–2025) with an automatic gearbox
DVLA does not record the gearbox, so this shows for every Focus Mk4 — it only applies to automatics. Car Mechanics describes the automatic as the seven-speed PowerShift dual-clutch; What Car? does not say which automatic its owners had.
- Reported by 3 publishersTiming belt / chain
If it has the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost petrol (belt-in-oil): 1.0 EcoBoost: oil-bathed timing belt can break up early
The 1.0 EcoBoost's timing belt runs in engine oil. If servicing has been missed or the wrong oil used, the belt can degrade early and shed debris that blocks the oil pickup, starving the engine of oil pressure. A low oil pressure light, rattling, rough idle or difficult starting are the reported signs; replacing the belt is a big job, quoted at around £1,000 or more. Ford later changed the camshaft drive to a chain.
Applies to: Ford 1.0 EcoBoost petrol (belt-driven camshafts) in the Fiesta, Focus, C-Max, B-Max, EcoSport, Mondeo, Transit/Tourneo Connect and Courier, built 2012–2019
Only the turbocharged 1.0 EcoBoost — Ford also sold non-turbo 1.0 engines of the same size. Cars built around 2018–2019 may have either a belt or a chain; a Ford dealer can tell from the VIN.

Measured at MOT: how a 2022 Focus fails more often
Based on 80,476 first MOT tests of this model at 4 years old (cars first used 2020–2021), compared against every car of the same age and fuel.
Nothing stands out. No category fails clearly more often on this model than on cars of the same age and fuel.
How to read this
These are MOT outcomes for other cars of the same model, age and fuel — not a prediction about this one, and not a fault diagnosis. A high rate means the category is worth checking, not that this car has a problem.
A comparison is only shown where it survives its own margin of error. Where a model is only slightly above average, both rates are shown and no multiple is given, because the data cannot tell the difference.
MOT results reflect how a car has been used and maintained as much as the model itself. High mileage, short journeys and deferred servicing all show up here.
Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Failure rates derived by FindServiceHistory from the DVSA anonymised MOT test and failure-item extracts.

If it has the Ford 1.6 EcoBoost petrol: Recall: cylinder head can crack if it overheats
On some 1.6 EcoBoost engines, localised overheating can crack the cylinder head. The crack can cause a pressurised oil leak and, in extreme cases, an engine fire. Under the DVSA recall, dealers inspect the engine and cooling system and fit a coolant level sensor with an audible and visual warning.
Applies to: Ford 1.6 EcoBoost petrol in the Focus, Kuga, C-Max, Fiesta ST, Mondeo, S-Max, Galaxy and Transit Connect, built 2010–2014
Only if it's the turbocharged 1.6 EcoBoost, not the non-turbo 1.6 Ti-VCT sold alongside it — check the badge or the V5C.

On some 2.0 Duratorq diesels built in 2014–2015, the engine software may not detect an overheat properly. In extreme cases the overheated engine can breach the oil sump and lose its oil. The recall fix is new software that adds a dashboard warning and reduces engine power when it overheats.

If it has the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost petrol (3-cylinder turbo): Coolant hose can fail and overheat the engine
On 1.0 EcoBoost engines built between October 2011 and October 2013, a coolant pipe can fail at high temperature, and the engine can then overheat. Ford reworked affected cars under a field service action and later said it would pay 100% of repairs linked to 1.0 overheating. If the temperature warning comes on, stop and let the engine cool.

Measured at MOT: how a 2015 Focus fails more often
Based on 140,251 first MOT tests of this model at 11 years old (cars first used 2013–2014), compared against every car of the same age and fuel.

MOT failure rate: the Focus against vehicles its age
In our analysis of DVSA's anonymised MOT data for 2024 and 2025, 32.4% of 1,821,192 initial MOT tests on the Ford Focus failed at the first attempt — about as often as vehicles of the same ages and fuel types, which failed 31.4%.

| Age | Tests | Bars | Focus | Same age & fuel | Difference |

These describe the model, not one car: how vehicles are used and maintained shows up as much as how they were built. Differences are the conservative end of a 95% confidence interval.

These describe the model, not one car. Plenty of cars never have the problems their model is known for, and a recall may already have been done on yours. Every problem links to its sources; a reported problem needs two independent publishers before we list it.

Common questions
What are the most common Focus problems?
For cars built from 2012, the problems at least two independent publishers report include: Electrical glitches and warning lights that come on for no reason; Automatic gearbox: jerky changes and gear-selection faults; 1.0 EcoBoost: oil-bathed timing belt can break up early; 1.6 TDCi diesel: turbo failures, injector leaks and clogging; PowerShift automatic: judder, jerky changes and clutch failure. Which apply depends on the generation and engine — they are listed generation by generation above, each with its sources.
Has the Focus been recalled?
Yes. DVSA lists recalls for the Focus built from 2012, shown above by generation. A recall covers a range of chassis numbers, so not every car is affected — check a specific car by VIN on GOV.UK, or by registration with our checker.
Does my Focus have these problems?
Not necessarily. These describe the model; many cars never have them, and a well-maintained car is less likely to. Enter your registration above to see the problems for your exact generation and engine, and whether DVSA records an outstanding recall on it. Whether a known problem was fixed is what a service history check shows.
Has this Focus had the work done?
A known problem matters far less on a car whose dealer records show it was fixed. A service history check returns the manufacturer's own dealership records for a specific car — and there's no charge if we find nothing.
