Qashqai Mk3 (J12) (2021 on)
Acknowledged by the manufacturer
Recalls, extended warranties, compensation schemes, service actions and statements.
- Recall · NissanFuel system
Recall: fuel pipe in the engine bay can chafe and leak
On Qashqais built 2021–2024, the fuel pipe can move against its retaining clip in the engine bay and wear. In an extreme case this can wear a hole and let fuel leak. Dealers inspect the pipe, fit a protective grommet, or replace the pipe if it is worn beyond limits. More than 100,000 UK cars are covered.
Applies to: Qashqai Mk3 (J12) built May 2021 – October 2024
- Recall · NissanHybrid & electric drive
Recall: battery state of charge can jump about (software)
On some Qashqais built late 2021 to early 2024, a battery management software fault can make the calculated and displayed battery state of charge fluctuate rapidly. The fix is a reprogram of the battery management system at a Nissan dealer.
Applies to: Qashqai Mk3 (J12) built September 2021 – January 2024
Not every Qashqai of these years is affected — a Nissan dealer can check by VIN.
- Recall · NissanHybrid & electric drive
Recall: e-POWER battery system can trigger limp mode
On some 2025–2026 Qashqai e-POWER models, a battery management system issue can bring up warnings and put the car into limp mode or cut power. It does not return to normal until the car has been switched off and left, key away, for about 30 minutes. The fix is a battery management software update.
Applies to: Qashqai Mk3 (J12) e-POWER built July 2025 – May 2026
e-POWER hybrid versions only — DVLA does not reliably separate them from the mild hybrid, so check the badge or ask a Nissan dealer to check the VIN.
- Recall · NissanSteering
Recall: ProPILOT may not warn when hands leave the wheel
The capacitive mat in the steering wheel that senses the driver's hands can have been damaged when the wheel was made. With ProPILOT driver assistance on, the car may then think hands are on the wheel when they are not and fail to warn. Dealers check the steering wheel serial number and replace it where needed.
Applies to: Qashqai Mk3 (J12) with ProPILOT, built May 2021 – September 2022
Only cars fitted with ProPILOT, which DVLA does not record.
Reported by owners and the motoring press
Problems at least two independent publishers report, that the maker has not acknowledged. They describe the model, not every car.
- Reported by 2 publishersScreen, sat-nav & audio
False dashboard warnings and infotainment freezes
Owners of the current Qashqai report software glitches that bring up warning lights for no reason — the tyre-pressure warning is a known example — and the NissanConnect infotainment system freezing. Most cases are reported as fixed quickly with a software update under warranty.
Applies to: Qashqai Mk3 (J12, 2021 on)

If it has the Renault-Nissan 1.2 TCe / 1.2 DIG-T turbo petrol (H5Ft / HRA2DDT): 1.2 TCe / 1.2 DIG-T turbo petrol: high oil consumption
The 1.2 turbo petrol shared by Renault, Dacia and Nissan has a widely reported thirst for oil, put down to its piston rings. The level can fall dangerously low between services if nobody checks it, and some engines have needed replacing. Check the dipstick often — Auto Express suggests every 1,000–2,000 miles — and keep receipts for any top-ups.
Applies to: Renault, Dacia and Nissan with the 1.2 TCe / 1.2 DIG-T turbo petrol (H5Ft / HRA2DDT, about 2012–2019): Clio Mk4 TCe 120, Captur Mk1 TCe 120, Mégane Mk4 TCe 130, Kadjar TCe 130, Duster TCe 125, Qashqai Mk2, Juke Mk1 and Pulsar 1.2 DIG-T. The complaint brought in France covers cars built 2012–2016.
DVLA records the capacity, not the engine code. At 1,197cc this is the turbo 1.2 TCe / DIG-T; Renault's older non-turbo 1.2 16v (1,149cc) and Nissan's 1.2 in the Micra and Note are different engines.

If it has the Nissan 1.2 DIG-T turbo petrol (HRA2DDT): 1.2 DIG-T turbo petrol: timing chain wear and rattle
Timing chain wear is reported on Nissan's 1.2 DIG-T turbo petrol, heard as a rattle from the engine, often under acceleration. Low oil — this engine's other known weakness — does not help. Listen carefully on a test drive, keep the oil topped up, and have any new rattle checked promptly before the chain jumps a tooth.
Applies to: Nissan Qashqai Mk2 (from 2014) and Juke Mk1 (from the 2014 facelift) with the 1.2 DIG-T turbo petrol (HRA2DDT), until the 1.3 DIG-T replaced it in 2019
DVLA records the capacity, not the engine: at 1,197cc this is the 1.2 DIG-T turbo petrol.

If it has the Renault-Nissan 1.5 dCi diesel (K9K): 1.5 dCi diesel: DPF clogging on short trips
The diesel particulate filter on the 1.5 dCi is known to clog on cars that mostly do short, slow journeys, bringing up a warning light and costing a lot if the filter has to be replaced. Interrupted regenerations can also wash fuel into the oil, so the oil level slowly rises — a sign to have it checked. A regular motorway run helps; a mainly town car is better off as a petrol.
Applies to: Renault, Dacia and Nissan with the 1.5 dCi diesel (K9K) and a particulate filter, including Clio, Captur, Mégane, Scénic, Kadjar, Duster, Sandero, Logan, Micra, Note, Juke, Qashqai and Pulsar
Mostly a problem for cars used on short trips; a diesel that has done regular long runs is far less likely to have it.

If it has the Renault-Nissan 1.5 dCi diesel (K9K): 1.5 dCi diesel: timing belt failures, some before the due date
The 1.5 dCi uses a timing belt, and belt failures are reported — some before the official change interval. A belt that snaps can wreck the engine. Intervals vary by model and year (from about four years / 60,000 miles to six years / 90,000 miles), and several sources suggest doing it early. Check the history for a belt, tensioner and water pump change.
Applies to: Renault, Dacia and Nissan with the 1.5 dCi diesel (K9K), including Clio, Captur, Mégane, Scénic, Kadjar, Duster, Sandero, Logan, Micra, Note, Juke, Qashqai and Pulsar

If it has the Renault-Nissan 1.5 dCi diesel (K9K): 1.5 dCi diesel: turbo failures
Turbo failures are reported on the 1.5 dCi, sometimes at fairly low mileages. Short, slow journeys and switching off straight after a hard drive are blamed, along with missed oil changes. Whistling and a loss of power are the early signs. Regular oil changes and a full service history are the best protection.

If it has the Renault-Nissan 1.6 dCi diesel (R9M): 1.6 dCi diesel: turbo failures
Turbo failures are reported on the Qashqai's 1.6 dCi diesel, put down to missed oil and filter changes, a clogged particulate filter or switching off with the turbo still hot. Early signs are whistling and a loss of power; a failing turbo can also make the engine run rough, refuse to rev past about 2,000rpm and smoke under acceleration. Quoted prices for a replacement turbo run from about £450 plus labour (Autocar) to over £1,700 for the part from Nissan (Car Mechanics).
Applies to: Nissan Qashqai Mk2 (2014–2018) with the 1.6 dCi diesel (R9M)

If it has the Renault-Nissan 2.0 dCi diesel (M9R): 2.0 dCi diesel: DPF clogging on short trips
The particulate filter on the 2.0 dCi diesel can clog on cars used mainly for short, town journeys, and a replacement is expensive. What Car? says the 2.0 suffers from it more than the 1.5. A long motorway run can sometimes clear it.
Applies to: Nissan X-Trail Mk2 (T31, to 2014) and Qashqai Mk1 (to 2011) with the 2.0 dCi diesel (M9R)

Recall: factory towbar kit bolts can loosen
On Qashqais built from mid-2013 to October 2014 with Nissan's towbar kit, the bolted joints holding the towbar to the body can loosen. If the car is driven on with loose bolts, in an extreme case the towbar can detach. Dealers inspect and rework the towbar kit.
Applies to: Qashqai Mk2 (J11) with a Nissan towbar kit, built July 2013 – October 2014
Only cars fitted with the towbar kit, which DVLA does not record.
- Recall · NissanBrakes
Recall: rear wheel-arch liner can rub through a brake hose
On Qashqais built 2013–2016, at high speed and with a heavy load the right-rear wheel-arch protector can deform and rub the rear brake hose. Over time this can wear through the hose and leak brake fluid. Dealers rework the arch protector and replace the brake hose if it is damaged.

Recall: no warning when an indicator bulb fails
On Qashqais built mid-2017 to January 2018, a body control module software setting means the indicators may not fast-flash to warn the driver when an indicator lamp has failed. Dealers reprogram the module.
Applies to: Qashqai Mk2 (J11) built June 2017 – January 2018
- Recall · NissanEmissions, DPF & AdBlue
Recall: rear oxygen sensor can fail without a warning
If the supply to the rear exhaust oxygen sensor shorts, the sensor fails but the driver may not get an immediate warning; the engine light may only come on after more driving. Dealers reprogram the engine ECU so it warns when the sensor fails.
Applies to: Qashqai Mk2, Juke Mk1, X-Trail Mk3 and Pulsar built April 2014 – May 2016
- Recall · NissanBody & corrosion
Recall: rear door child lock switch can move
On almost 300,000 Nissans built from late 2015 to mid-2016 the rear door child lock switch may not be held in place firmly enough, so the lock can be knocked out of position. Dealers fit an extra part into the switch opening.

Measured at MOT: how a 2017 Qashqai fails more often
Based on 106,348 first MOT tests of this model at 9 years old (cars first used 2015–2016), compared against every car of the same age and fuel.
Nothing stands out. No category fails clearly more often on this model than on cars of the same age and fuel.
How to read this
These are MOT outcomes for other cars of the same model, age and fuel — not a prediction about this one, and not a fault diagnosis. A high rate means the category is worth checking, not that this car has a problem.
A comparison is only shown where it survives its own margin of error. Where a model is only slightly above average, both rates are shown and no multiple is given, because the data cannot tell the difference.
MOT results reflect how a car has been used and maintained as much as the model itself. High mileage, short journeys and deferred servicing all show up here.
Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Failure rates derived by FindServiceHistory from the DVSA anonymised MOT test and failure-item extracts.

Applies to: Renault, Dacia and Nissan with the 1.5 dCi diesel (K9K), including Clio, Captur, Mégane, Scénic, Kadjar, Duster, Sandero, Logan, Micra, Note, Qashqai and Pulsar

Measured at MOT: how a 2010 Qashqai fails more often
Based on 25,401 first MOT tests of this model at 16 years old (cars first used 2008–2009), compared against every car of the same age and fuel.

MOT failure rate: the Qashqai against vehicles its age
In our analysis of DVSA's anonymised MOT data for 2024 and 2025, 32.1% of 1,113,450 initial MOT tests on the Nissan Qashqai failed at the first attempt — 18% more often than vehicles of the same ages and fuel types, which failed 27.2%.
QashqaiCars of the same age and fuel (all makes)
| Age | Tests | Bars | Qashqai | Same age & fuel | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3–5 years | 225,353 | 13.5% | 14.1% | About the same | |
| 6–9 years | 426,180 | 24.7% | 23.5% | About the same | |
| 10–14 years | 379,754 | 46.3% | 35.7% | 29% higher | |
| 15–19 years | 82,163 | 56.1% | 42.6% | 31% higher |
These describe the model, not one car: how vehicles are used and maintained shows up as much as how they were built. Differences are the conservative end of a 95% confidence interval.

These describe the model, not one car. Plenty of cars never have the problems their model is known for, and a recall may already have been done on yours. Every problem links to its sources; a reported problem needs two independent publishers before we list it.

Common questions
What are the most common Qashqai problems?
For cars built from 2012, the problems at least two independent publishers report include: False dashboard warnings and infotainment freezes; 1.2 TCe / 1.2 DIG-T turbo petrol: high oil consumption; 1.2 DIG-T turbo petrol: timing chain wear and rattle; 1.5 dCi diesel: DPF clogging on short trips; 1.5 dCi diesel: timing belt failures, some before the due date. Which apply depends on the generation and engine — they are listed generation by generation above, each with its sources.
Has the Qashqai been recalled?
Yes. DVSA lists recalls for the Qashqai built from 2012, shown above by generation. A recall covers a range of chassis numbers, so not every car is affected — check a specific car by VIN on GOV.UK, or by registration with our checker.
Does my Qashqai have these problems?
Not necessarily. These describe the model; many cars never have them, and a well-maintained car is less likely to. Enter your registration above to see the problems for your exact generation and engine, and whether DVSA records an outstanding recall on it. Whether a known problem was fixed is what a service history check shows.
Has this Qashqai had the work done?
A known problem matters far less on a car whose dealer records show it was fixed. A service history check returns the manufacturer's own dealership records for a specific car — and there's no charge if we find nothing.
