How the mileage check works

1

Enter the reg

We look the car up instantly against the DVLA vehicle register and the DVSA MOT database — both official, both free.

2

See every MOT reading

You get the full MOT history: pass/fail, advisories, failures, and the exact mileage recorded at each test.

3

Get a clocking flag

We compare every mileage reading. If a later one is lower than an earlier one, we flag a possible discrepancy for you to question.

Why checking a car's mileage matters

Winding back an odometer — "clocking" — instantly makes a car look younger, less worn and worth more than it is. It's illegal to sell a clocked car without disclosing it, but cheap tools mean it still happens, and rising used-car prices make it worth a fraudster's while. A car showing 60,000 miles that has really covered 120,000 is due for major work its dashboard hides. A quick mileage clock check — comparing the reading logged at each MOT — is the simplest way to catch it.

The single best free defence is the MOT mileage trail. Because the reading is logged at every annual test, a rollback usually leaves a visible fingerprint — a later test showing fewer miles than an earlier one. That's exactly what this tool surfaces. For the fuller story, read our guides on how to check if a car has been clocked and how to read an MOT history.

Car mileage check — FAQs

Is this car mileage check really free?

Yes. It uses official DVLA and DVSA data, which is free — there's no signup and no payment. We show the vehicle's details, its full MOT history including the mileage recorded at each test, and flag any discrepancy. The paid manufacturer service history is separate.

How do you detect a clocked car?

Every MOT test records the car's mileage. A car's odometer should only ever go up, so if a later MOT reading is lower than an earlier one, that's a mileage discrepancy — a classic sign of clocking. We compare every recorded reading and flag any that go backwards.

Does a mileage discrepancy always mean fraud?

No. Most backwards readings are suspicious, but some are legitimate — a replaced instrument cluster, or occasionally a data-entry error at the test centre. Treat a flag as a question to ask the seller, not proof of fraud. If they can't explain it with paperwork, walk away.

What's the difference between this and a full service history check?

This free tool shows the official MOT record and mileage trail. A full service history check (£9.99) adds the manufacturer's own dealer service records — the service dates, mileages and work done that aren't in the MOT data. Start here for free, then upgrade if you want the complete picture.

Can mileage be faked between MOTs?

Yes — this check catches rollbacks that show up in the official MOT record, but it can't see tampering done and undone between tests, or on a car too new to have MOT history. It's a strong first filter, not a cast-iron guarantee. Always combine it with an inspection.
