Fiesta Mk8 (2017–2023)
Acknowledged by the manufacturer
Recalls, extended warranties, compensation schemes, service actions and statements.
- Recall · FordEngine
Recall: engine oil separator may be damaged and leak
Some engines were assembled with an oil separator that had been damaged beforehand and can leak oil. Dealers inspect it and replace it if it is damaged or leaking.
Applies to: Ford Fiesta, Puma, Focus and Kuga built February 2020 to May 2022
The recall notice does not name the engine and covers fewer than 10,000 cars; a Ford dealer can check by VIN.
- Recall · FordFuel system
Recall: fuel line can chafe against its support shield
The fuel line can rub against its support shield (bracket) and be damaged. Dealers replace the shield and inspect, and if necessary rework, the fuel lines. Over 100,000 UK vehicles are covered.
Applies to: Ford Puma (DVSA lists 2021–2024), Fiesta Mk8 (2021–2022) and Transit Courier (2023)
Reported by owners and the motoring press
Problems at least two independent publishers report, that the maker has not acknowledged. They describe the model, not every car.

Automatic gearbox: jerky changes or outright failure
Owners of this Fiesta report jerky shifts and, in some cases, complete failure of the PowerShift automatic, and say repairs are expensive. Check for smooth changes and vibration on a test drive; the manual is the safer used buy.
Applies to: Ford Fiesta Mk8 (2017–2023) with an automatic gearbox
DVLA does not record the gearbox, so this shows for every Fiesta Mk8 — it only applies to automatics.
- Reported by 2 publishersScreen, sat-nav & audio
SYNC 3 infotainment glitches
Owners report electrical glitches with the SYNC 3 touchscreen system. These are usually cured by a software update from a Ford dealer. Check the screen, phone connection and sat-nav all work on a test drive.
Applies to: Ford Fiesta Mk8 (2017–2023) with the SYNC 3 touchscreen
Only cars with the SYNC 3 touchscreen (Zetec and above, per What Car?); DVLA does not record the trim.
- Reported by 3 publishersEmissions, DPF & AdBlue
Diesel particulate filter (DPF) clogging and repair bills
Owners of these diesels report DPF problems that can be expensive to put right. The filter needs regular longer, faster drives to clean itself; a car used mostly for short, slow trips can clog it, and interrupted cleaning cycles can dilute the engine oil with fuel. For mainly town use a petrol is the safer choice.
Applies to: Diesel Ford Fiesta Mk8, B-Max, C-Max / Grand C-Max, EcoSport, Kuga Mk2 and Mk3, Mondeo (2014–2022) and Ka Mk2
Mostly a matter of how the car is used — a diesel driven regularly on faster roads is far less likely to have trouble.

Engine oil leaks on earlier cars
Oil leaks were a particular problem on earlier examples of this Fiesta. Look around the engine bay with a torch for oil where it shouldn't be, and for marks where the car is usually parked.

- Reported by 2 publishersBody & corrosion
Door seals can fail and let water into the cabin
Door seals on this Fiesta are known to fail and let water in. Check the carpets for damp and for water marks; new seals are not expensive.
Applies to: Ford Fiesta Mk8 (2017–2023)
- Reported by 2 publishersClutch & flywheel
Clutch wear
Many owners report high rates of clutch wear on this Fiesta. A biting point near the top of the pedal, or revs rising without the car accelerating, means a clutch that is on its way out.
Applies to: Ford Fiesta Mk8 (2017–2023) with a manual gearbox
DVLA does not record the gearbox; this is about manual cars.
- Reported by 2 publishersSuspension
Suspension knocks and worn bushes
Suspension knocks and worn bushes, including at the rear axle, are a recurring theme on this Fiesta, which often spends its life on rough urban roads. Listen for knocks and squeaks over bumps and look for leaking shock absorbers.
Applies to: Ford Fiesta Mk8 (2017–2023)

12V battery trouble: flat batteries and electrical glitches
Owners report 12V batteries that fail early or go flat. Parkers says there is evidence the car does not reliably keep the battery charged, which can cause electrical glitches or a no-start, and that mild-hybrid Fiestas used for short trips seem particularly prone. A battery test is worth doing on any used example.
Applies to: Ford Fiesta Mk8 (2017–2023), especially the 1.0 EcoBoost mild hybrid
- Reported by 3 publishersTiming belt / chain
If it has the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost petrol (belt-in-oil): 1.0 EcoBoost: oil-bathed timing belt can break up early
The 1.0 EcoBoost's timing belt runs in engine oil. If servicing has been missed or the wrong oil used, the belt can degrade early and shed debris that blocks the oil pickup, starving the engine of oil pressure. A low oil pressure light, rattling, rough idle or difficult starting are the reported signs; replacing the belt is a big job, quoted at around £1,000 or more. Ford later changed the camshaft drive to a chain.
Applies to: Ford 1.0 EcoBoost petrol (belt-driven camshafts) in the Fiesta, Focus, C-Max, B-Max, EcoSport, Mondeo, Transit/Tourneo Connect and Courier, built 2012–2019
Only the turbocharged 1.0 EcoBoost — Ford also sold non-turbo 1.0 engines of the same size. Cars built around 2018–2019 may have either a belt or a chain; a Ford dealer can tell from the VIN.

If it has the Ford 1.6 TDCi diesel (DV6 / DLD-416): 1.6 TDCi diesel: turbo failures, injector leaks and clogging
The 1.6 TDCi diesel has a reputation for turbo failures, leaking injectors and clogged particulate filters and EGR valves. Listen for tapping from the top of the engine, look for oily deposits around the injectors and watch for heavy smoke under hard acceleration.
Applies to: Ford 1.6 TDCi diesel in the Fiesta, Focus, C-Max, B-Max, Mondeo and Transit/Tourneo Connect, built to 2018
- Reported by 2 publishersEngine
If it has the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost petrol: 1.0 EcoBoost: carbon build-up causing misfires and rough running
As a direct-injection engine, the 1.0 EcoBoost can build up carbon deposits inside, which shows as misfiring at idle, rough running, hesitation or reluctance to start. A specialist cleaning service and good-quality fuel usually improve it.
Applies to: Ford 1.0 EcoBoost petrol in the Fiesta, EcoSport and Transit Courier, built from 2012
Only the turbocharged 1.0 EcoBoost — Ford also sold non-turbo 1.0 engines of the same size.

Measured at MOT: how a 2020 Fiesta fails more often
Based on 169,701 first MOT tests of this model at 6 years old (cars first used 2018–2019), compared against every car of the same age and fuel.
Nothing stands out. No category fails clearly more often on this model than on cars of the same age and fuel.
How to read this
These are MOT outcomes for other cars of the same model, age and fuel — not a prediction about this one, and not a fault diagnosis. A high rate means the category is worth checking, not that this car has a problem.
A comparison is only shown where it survives its own margin of error. Where a model is only slightly above average, both rates are shown and no multiple is given, because the data cannot tell the difference.
MOT results reflect how a car has been used and maintained as much as the model itself. High mileage, short journeys and deferred servicing all show up here.

Recall: diesel glow plug control module can short and catch fire
On diesel Fiestas of this era, water can get into the glow plug control module, which is not waterproof, and cause it to overheat. Because the module has a permanent live feed, there is a risk of fire even when the car is parked and unattended. The fix is a replacement, waterproofed module; some earlier repairs were themselves recalled again, so check the work has been done.

If it has the Ford 1.6 EcoBoost petrol: Recall: cylinder head can crack if it overheats
On some 1.6 EcoBoost engines, localised overheating can crack the cylinder head. The crack can cause a pressurised oil leak and, in extreme cases, an engine fire. Under the DVSA recall, dealers inspect the engine and cooling system and fit a coolant level sensor with an audible and visual warning.
Applies to: Ford 1.6 EcoBoost petrol in the Focus, Kuga, C-Max, Fiesta ST, Mondeo, S-Max, Galaxy and Transit Connect, built 2010–2014
Only if it's the turbocharged 1.6 EcoBoost, not the non-turbo 1.6 Ti-VCT sold alongside it — check the badge or the V5C.

If it has the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost petrol (3-cylinder turbo): Coolant hose can fail and overheat the engine
On 1.0 EcoBoost engines built between October 2011 and October 2013, a coolant pipe can fail at high temperature, and the engine can then overheat. Ford reworked affected cars under a field service action and later said it would pay 100% of repairs linked to 1.0 overheating. If the temperature warning comes on, stop and let the engine cool.
Applies to: Ford 1.0 EcoBoost petrol (3-cylinder turbo) in the Focus Mk3, Fiesta Mk7, C-Max / Grand C-Max and B-Max, built 2011–2013
Only if it's the turbocharged 1.0 EcoBoost — Ford also sold a non-turbo 1.0 of the same size.

Door seals come loose and let water into the footwells
Door seals on this Fiesta can work loose from the frame, causing wind noise and letting water in. Feel the front and rear carpets for damp or a musty smell; left alone it can lead to mould. Refixing the seal is usually a cheap job.

Heater stuck on cold air (blend door actuator)
A common Fiesta fault is a heater that only blows cold air, usually because a small plastic flap — the blend door actuator — sticks open. It is often a cheap fix. Check the heating and ventilation work on both hot and cold on a test drive.

Clutch wear and slipping
Slipping, smelly or otherwise worn clutches turn up fairly regularly on this Fiesta, which often spends its life in town or with learner drivers. A heavy or gritty pedal, or revs rising faster than the speed in a higher gear, points to a clutch that is on its way out.

Common questions
What are the most common Fiesta problems?
For cars built from 2012, the problems at least two independent publishers report include: Automatic gearbox: jerky changes or outright failure; SYNC 3 infotainment glitches; Diesel particulate filter (DPF) clogging and repair bills; Engine oil leaks on earlier cars; Door seals can fail and let water into the cabin. Which apply depends on the generation and engine — they are listed generation by generation above, each with its sources.
Has the Fiesta been recalled?
Yes. DVSA lists recalls for the Fiesta built from 2012, shown above by generation. A recall covers a range of chassis numbers, so not every car is affected — check a specific car by VIN on GOV.UK, or by registration with our checker.
Does my Fiesta have these problems?
Not necessarily. These describe the model; many cars never have them, and a well-maintained car is less likely to. Enter your registration above to see the problems for your exact generation and engine, and whether DVSA records an outstanding recall on it. Whether a known problem was fixed is what a service history check shows.
Has this Fiesta had the work done?
A known problem matters far less on a car whose dealer records show it was fixed. A service history check returns the manufacturer's own dealership records for a specific car — and there's no charge if we find nothing.
