7-speed dry-clutch DSG (DQ200): judder, clutch wear, mechatronic
The 7-speed DSG automatic with dry clutches, fitted behind the smaller petrol engines, is the DSG variant specialists see most. Owners notice judder or jerking when pulling away and at low speed, harsh or delayed changes, or a flashing gear display and limp mode. Causes are worn clutches, worst in stop-start town driving, or a failing mechatronic control unit; fixes range from a software update or clutch replacement to a mechatronic repair.
Applies to: VW Golf, Polo, T-Roc and T-Cross, Audi A1 and A3, SEAT Ibiza and Leon, Skoda Fabia and Octavia with the 7-speed dry-clutch DSG (DQ200), built from 2012
DVLA does not record the gearbox. This applies only to cars with the 7-speed dry-clutch DSG automatic (DQ200), usually paired with the smaller petrol engines — not manual cars, and not the 6-speed or heavier-duty wet-clutch DSGs.

TDI diesels: blocked DPF and EGR valve on short-trip cars
Diesel versions driven mostly on short trips often don't get hot enough for long enough to burn the soot out of the diesel particulate filter (DPF), and the EGR valve can stick with carbon too. Owners see a DPF warning light, reduced power or limp mode. A long fast drive can clear a filter that isn't too far gone and specialists can clean one; otherwise it needs a new DPF, because a car without a working filter fails its MOT.
Applies to: VW Polo and Audi A1 diesels (1.2, 1.4, 1.6 and 2.0 TDI) built 2012–2021

If it has the VW Group 1.4 TSI / TFSI petrol (EA111 / EA211): Audi A1 1.4 TFSI: turbocharger failure
The 1.4 TFSI turbo petrol in the A1 is a good engine, but its turbocharger has a record of failing. Warning signs are a whine or loud whistle that rises with boost, black smoke and a marked loss of power. A replacement turbo costs around £2,000.
Applies to: Audi A1 with the 1.4 TFSI petrol, built 2010–2018
Measured at MOT: how a 2022 A1 fails more often
Based on 30,951 first MOT tests of this model at 4 years old (cars first used 2020–2021), compared against every car of the same age and fuel.
Nothing stands out. No category fails clearly more often on this model than on cars of the same age and fuel.
How to read this
These are MOT outcomes for other cars of the same model, age and fuel — not a prediction about this one, and not a fault diagnosis. A high rate means the category is worth checking, not that this car has a problem.
A comparison is only shown where it survives its own margin of error. Where a model is only slightly above average, both rates are shown and no multiple is given, because the data cannot tell the difference.
MOT results reflect how a car has been used and maintained as much as the model itself. High mileage, short journeys and deferred servicing all show up here.

Bluetooth phone connection drops or will not pair
Some first-generation A1s lose their Bluetooth connection with a smartphone mid-journey or refuse to connect at all. Pair your phone and keep it connected for the whole test drive.

Front electric windows sticking to their seals
Honest John logged several reports of early A1s' front windows sticking, attributed on owners' forums to a sticky residue left on the window seals in manufacture. Lubricating the seals is only a temporary cure.
Applies to: A1 (Mk1, 2010–2018), mainly earlier cars

- Reported by 3 publishersTiming belt / chain
If it has the VW Group EA111 1.2 / 1.4 TSI petrol (timing chain): 1.2 and 1.4 TSI (chain engines): timing chain stretch and rattle
The earlier chain-driven 1.2 and 1.4 TSI/TFSI turbo petrols are known for timing chains that stretch and tensioners that can no longer take up the slack. The sign is a metallic rattle or 'zinging' for a few seconds after a cold start. Left alone, the chain can jump a tooth or break and wreck the engine, so a rattling engine needs a new chain kit promptly.
Applies to: VW Polo, SEAT Ibiza, Audi A1 and Skoda Yeti with the chain-driven 1.2 TSI/TFSI or 1.4 TSI/TFSI turbo petrol (EA111), built up to 2014
Only the turbocharged 1.2 and 1.4 TSI/TFSI chain engines. The non-turbo 1.2 and 1.4 of the same years, and the belt-driven 1.0, 1.2 and 1.4 TSI that replaced them around 2014–15, are different engines — DVLA records only the capacity, so check which engine the car has.

MOT failure rate: the A1 against vehicles its age
In our analysis of DVSA's anonymised MOT data for 2024 and 2025, 24.1% of 434,910 initial MOT tests on the Audi A1 failed at the first attempt — about as often as vehicles of the same ages and fuel types, which failed 25.1%.

These describe the model, not one car. Plenty of cars never have the problems their model is known for, and a recall may already have been done on yours. Every problem links to its sources; a reported problem needs two independent publishers before we list it.
Recalls are listed by DVSA for the model around its build date — check a specific car by VIN at GOV.UK. Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0.
Common questions
What are the most common A1 problems?
For cars built from 2012, the problems at least two independent publishers report include: 7-speed dry-clutch DSG (DQ200): judder, clutch wear, mechatronic; TDI diesels: blocked DPF and EGR valve on short-trip cars; Audi A1 1.4 TFSI: turbocharger failure; Bluetooth phone connection drops or will not pair; Front electric windows sticking to their seals. Which apply depends on the generation and engine — they are listed generation by generation above, each with its sources.
Has the A1 been recalled?
Yes. DVSA lists recalls for the A1 built from 2012, shown above by generation. A recall covers a range of chassis numbers, so not every car is affected — check a specific car by VIN on GOV.UK, or by registration with our checker.
Does my A1 have these problems?
Not necessarily. These describe the model; many cars never have them, and a well-maintained car is less likely to. Enter your registration above to see the problems for your exact generation and engine, and whether DVSA records an outstanding recall on it. Whether a known problem was fixed is what a service history check shows.
Has this A1 had the work done?
A known problem matters far less on a car whose dealer records show it was fixed. A service history check returns the manufacturer's own dealership records for a specific car — and there's no charge if we find nothing.
