Free Spec Check · Factory Build Sheet
Car spec check — free, by registration
Enter a registration for the vehicle's registered specification, free and with no account. Then, if you want to know what that particular car was actually ordered with, open the manufacturer's factory build sheet.
What is a car spec check?
How to check a car's spec by registration
- Enter the registration in the free check above — no account, no card.
- Read the registered spec: make, model, engine size, fuel, colour, year of manufacture, tax and MOT status, and the latest recorded mileage.
- Open the factory build sheet if you need the options that particular car was ordered with. It is offered under your result, only for makes where the manufacturer actually holds one.
Free spec check vs the factory build sheet
The free check returns the registered specification — what DVLA and DVSA hold about the vehicle. That is the same for every example of the model, which is precisely its limit: it cannot tell you what this particular car was ordered with. The build sheet can, because it is decoded against the chassis rather than the model.
What's on a factory build sheet
The manufacturer’s own record of how one chassis left the production line. This is a real example, from a 2022 Audi A4 40 TDI quattro:
- Paint
- Daytona grey pearl effect (6Y)
- Interior trim
- Soul (black) (EI)
- Gearbox
- 7-speed automatic, quattro
- Factory options
- 182 items, by code and description
Each option comes with its manufacturer code, so it can be matched against a brochure, a dealer’s price list or a seller’s advert line by line.
The colour by name, the code where it was recorded
On cars a few years old the paint code is almost always present. On older ones it is frequently a colour name and no code, because that is all the manufacturer stored. We show what was recorded and never fill a gap with a guess. The code is usually also printed on a sticker or plate on the car itself — often in a door shut, under the bonnet or in the boot — which is worth checking against the build sheet before ordering paint.
Cheaper with a service history check
The build sheet costs £3.99 on its own, or £2.99 when you add it to a service history check — tick the build sheet option before you pay. Either way the payment is only taken once a build sheet arrives.
What people use it for
Writing the advert once, from the factory record rather than from memory. Checking an options pack really was fitted before agreeing a price. Ordering the right paint or trim part. And settling a spec disagreement with an answer that comes from the manufacturer rather than from the seller. Knowing the exact engine also lets you look up the service schedule for that engine.
What this isn't
It is not a valuation, not a finance or write-off check, and not the service history — those are separate. This covers how the car left the factory, not what has happened to it since. For that, see the free MOT history check and the service history check by registration.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the car spec check free?
Yes. Enter a registration and you get the vehicle's registered specification — make, model, engine size, fuel, colour, year, tax and MOT status — free, with no account. The optional upgrade is the factory build sheet, which shows the extras that particular car was ordered with.
How do I find out what spec my car is?
Enter the registration in the free check on this page. It returns the registered specification from DVLA and DVSA in a few seconds. For the options that individual car was ordered with — packs, wheels, audio, paint — you need the manufacturer's factory build sheet, which is the optional upgrade shown under your result.
What is a car build sheet?
It is the manufacturer's own record of how one specific chassis was built: the paint and trim codes, the gearbox, the wheels and every option added on the production line when the car was ordered. It is tied to the VIN, which is why it describes that exact car rather than the model in general.
What's the difference between standard spec and factory options?
Standard equipment is what every example of that model comes with — it tells you nothing unique about an individual car. Factory-fitted options are the extras chosen when it was ordered: a panoramic roof, upgraded wheels, a technology pack, premium audio, metallic paint. Those are what the build sheet lists, and they are what separates a base car from a loaded one.
Will it show my paint code?
Usually, on a car a few years old. Every build sheet names the factory colour; the code itself is recorded on most recent cars but is often missing on older ones, where you get the manufacturer's colour name instead. We show exactly what was recorded and never invent a code — a wrong one costs somebody a respray.
Isn't a paint code free elsewhere?
Yes — several sites give paint codes away because they sell paint, and if a code is genuinely all you need, use them. The build sheet adds the rest of the build for that one chassis: the trim, the gearbox, the wheels and every factory option, from the manufacturer's own record.
Which makes is the build sheet available for?
Most of them. It does not work on Porsche, Renault, Nissan or Mazda — those manufacturers either return nothing or return too little to be worth paying for — so we don't offer it on those and you are never charged for one.
How much does a factory build sheet cost?
£3.99 on its own, or £2.99 when you add it to a service history check. The standard spec check is always free.
What if you hold no build sheet for my car?
You are not charged. The payment is authorised when you order and only taken once a build sheet actually arrives — if the manufacturer holds nothing, the authorisation is released and nothing reaches your statement.
Does a spec check show service history, finance or write-offs?
No. A spec check covers how the car was built, not what has happened to it since. Service history is a separate check against manufacturer dealer records, and finance, stolen and write-off markers come from a provenance (HPI-style) check.
Can I get a public page for my registration?
No. The build record is licensed manufacturer data, so it goes on your own report rather than onto a public page for that registration.
