Garage labour rates
Hourly labour rates as published. A cambelt or clutch job is mostly labour, so the rate matters more there than on a service.
How to pay less
- Book the service the schedule actually calls for. An interim service when a full one isn't due, or the other way round, is where most overspend comes from — the maker's schedule for your engine tells you which.
- Ask for a fixed price for your car, not the “from” price: it depends on the engine size and the oil it needs.
- Servicing at an independent garage does not void a manufacturer's warranty in the UK if it follows the maker's schedule and uses parts of matching quality — the motor vehicle block exemption rules. Keep the invoices: they are your record.
- A service plan spreads the cost; it is only cheaper if you keep the car long enough to use every service in it.
Where these prices come from
Every price is one a fast-fit chain, a franchised dealer or a named booking platform publishes on its own website, quoted word for word on the source page and dated. Survey averages (RAC, BookMyGarage and others) are labelled as averages. We don't enter a registration or postcode into anyone's quote tool, and we never invent a price for a car we haven't seen.

Common questions
How much is a car service?
Published prices for a full service run from £120 to £465, and the middle of the 29 we checked is £279. An interim service runs £100–£305, and a major service £210–£469. The price for one car depends on its engine, the oil it takes and the garage.
How much is an oil and filter change?
Published prices run from £99 to £132. An oil change isn't a service: it doesn't include the checks, filters and fluids a service does, and on most cars it doesn't reset the service record.
How much does a cambelt replacement cost?
Published figures run from £420 to £758. Most of the cost is labour, so it varies with the engine; many garages replace the water pump at the same time. Whether your engine has a belt at all is on our cambelt-or-chain page.
Does an independent garage void my warranty?
No — not in the UK, as long as the garage follows the manufacturer's service schedule and uses parts of matching quality. That's the motor vehicle block exemption. Keep the invoices: they are what proves the work was done.
What's the difference between an interim and a full service?
An interim service is the smaller one — usually oil and filter plus a set of checks, every six months or 6,000 miles. A full service adds filters (air, often cabin and fuel), more checks and fluids, usually every year or 12,000 miles. A major service adds the longer-interval items such as spark plugs and brake fluid. Your car's own schedule decides what's due.
