Recall: engine software update to prevent breakdowns
Some recent Renault Captur and Arkana need their engine (injection) computer reprogrammed. Without the update the car can break down or fail to start. Dealers carry out the software update.
Applies to: Renault Captur Mk2, Arkana and Clio Mk5 built September 2022 – July 2025 (12,500 vehicles)
DVSA does not say which engine is affected; a Renault dealer can confirm by VIN.

If it has the Renault-Nissan 1.2 TCe / 1.2 DIG-T turbo petrol (H5Ft / HRA2DDT): 1.2 TCe / 1.2 DIG-T turbo petrol: high oil consumption
The 1.2 turbo petrol shared by Renault, Dacia and Nissan has a widely reported thirst for oil, put down to its piston rings. The level can fall dangerously low between services if nobody checks it, and some engines have needed replacing. Check the dipstick often — Auto Express suggests every 1,000–2,000 miles — and keep receipts for any top-ups.
Applies to: Renault, Dacia and Nissan with the 1.2 TCe / 1.2 DIG-T turbo petrol (H5Ft / HRA2DDT, about 2012–2019): Clio Mk4 TCe 120, Captur Mk1 TCe 120, Mégane Mk4 TCe 130, Kadjar TCe 130, Duster TCe 125, Qashqai Mk2, Juke Mk1 and Pulsar 1.2 DIG-T. The complaint brought in France covers cars built 2012–2016.
DVLA records the capacity, not the engine code. At 1,197cc this is the turbo 1.2 TCe / DIG-T; Renault's older non-turbo 1.2 16v (1,149cc) and Nissan's 1.2 in the Micra and Note are different engines.

If it has the Renault-Nissan 1.5 dCi diesel (K9K): 1.5 dCi diesel: DPF clogging on short trips
The diesel particulate filter on the 1.5 dCi is known to clog on cars that mostly do short, slow journeys, bringing up a warning light and costing a lot if the filter has to be replaced. Interrupted regenerations can also wash fuel into the oil, so the oil level slowly rises — a sign to have it checked. A regular motorway run helps; a mainly town car is better off as a petrol.
Applies to: Renault, Dacia and Nissan with the 1.5 dCi diesel (K9K) and a particulate filter, including Clio, Captur, Mégane, Scénic, Kadjar, Duster, Sandero, Logan, Micra, Note, Juke, Qashqai and Pulsar
Mostly a problem for cars used on short trips; a diesel that has done regular long runs is far less likely to have it.

- Reported by 3 publishersTiming belt / chain
If it has the Renault-Nissan 1.5 dCi diesel (K9K): 1.5 dCi diesel: timing belt failures, some before the due date
The 1.5 dCi uses a timing belt, and belt failures are reported — some before the official change interval. A belt that snaps can wreck the engine. Intervals vary by model and year (from about four years / 60,000 miles to six years / 90,000 miles), and several sources suggest doing it early. Check the history for a belt, tensioner and water pump change.
Applies to: Renault, Dacia and Nissan with the 1.5 dCi diesel (K9K), including Clio, Captur, Mégane, Scénic, Kadjar, Duster, Sandero, Logan, Micra, Note, Juke, Qashqai and Pulsar

If it has the Renault-Nissan 1.5 dCi diesel (K9K): 1.5 dCi diesel: turbo failures
Turbo failures are reported on the 1.5 dCi, sometimes at fairly low mileages. Short, slow journeys and switching off straight after a hard drive are blamed, along with missed oil changes. Whistling and a loss of power are the early signs. Regular oil changes and a full service history are the best protection.
Applies to: Renault, Dacia and Nissan with the 1.5 dCi diesel (K9K), including Clio, Captur, Mégane, Scénic, Kadjar, Duster, Sandero, Logan, Micra, Note, Qashqai and Pulsar

If it has the Renault 1.6 E-Tech full hybrid (H4M): E-Tech full hybrid: electrical faults
Owners in What Car?'s reliability survey reported electrical problems on the Clio, particularly the E-Tech hybrid versions, that often needed a trip to the dealer. RAC's survey of Clio E-Tech hybrid owners also turned up electrical faults, from wipers to cars that would not start. Neither describes a single repeat part failure, so treat it as a reason to check the car's dealer history.
Applies to: Renault Clio Mk5 E-Tech full hybrid (on sale from May 2020)
Applies to the E-Tech hybrid only; DVLA records it as a petrol hybrid of 1,598cc.

Measured at MOT: how a 2023 Clio fails more often
Based on 18,934 first MOT tests of this model at 3 years old (cars first used 2021–2022), compared against every car of the same age and fuel.
Nothing stands out. No category fails clearly more often on this model than on cars of the same age and fuel.
How to read this
These are MOT outcomes for other cars of the same model, age and fuel — not a prediction about this one, and not a fault diagnosis. A high rate means the category is worth checking, not that this car has a problem.
A comparison is only shown where it survives its own margin of error. Where a model is only slightly above average, both rates are shown and no multiple is given, because the data cannot tell the difference.
MOT results reflect how a car has been used and maintained as much as the model itself. High mileage, short journeys and deferred servicing all show up here.

- Recall · RenaultBrakes
Recall: front brake hoses can chafe and leak brake fluid
Two recalls covered early Clio Mk4s whose front brake hoses could be damaged — first because the hose protectors were fitted wrongly, then because the wheel-arch liners could rub on the hoses. A leaking hose shows as a brake warning light and a longer pedal. Dealers repositioned the parts and replaced damaged hoses.
Applies to: Clio Mk4 built November 2012 – April 2015 (20,545 and 49,748 cars across the two recalls)
Recalls apply to specific vehicles by VIN — a Renault dealer or the DVSA recall checker can confirm whether this car was included and whether the work has been done.
- Recall · RenaultElectrics
Recall: wiper linkage can bend or break when frozen to the screen
In sub-zero weather the wiper arms can freeze to the windscreen, and switching the wipers on could bend or break the linkage so the screen is no longer cleared. The recall fitted a stronger linkage.
Applies to: Clio Mk4 built November 2012 – July 2015 (68,552 cars)
Recalls apply to specific vehicles by VIN — a Renault dealer or the DVSA recall checker can confirm whether this car was included and whether the work has been done.
- Recall · RenaultBody & corrosion
Recall: rear spoiler can detach at speed
On some early Clio Mk4s the bonding of the rear spoiler may not meet specification, and temperature changes could let it come off at high speed. Dealers inspected and re-bonded the spoiler where needed.
Applies to: Clio Mk4 built 2013–2015 (1,096 cars)
Recalls apply to specific vehicles by VIN — a Renault dealer or the DVSA recall checker can confirm whether this car was included and whether the work has been done.
- Recall · RenaultSuspension
Recall: wheel nuts or rear axle bolts may not be tightened
Two small recalls covered Clios that left the factory with the wheel nuts, or the bolts holding a rear stub-axle carrier, not tightened to specification — in the worst case a wheel could come loose. Dealers checked and tightened them, replacing the axle assembly if a bolt was missing.
Applies to: Clio Mk4 built April – November 2015 (418 cars) and February 2016 (415 cars)
Recalls apply to specific vehicles by VIN — a Renault dealer or the DVSA recall checker can confirm whether this car was included and whether the work has been done.
- Recall · RenaultInterior
Recall: rear seat centre hinge can break under heavy braking
With heavy luggage in the boot, an emergency stop or crash could break the centre hinge of the rear seats and let luggage into the cabin. The recall fitted a reinforcing bracket.
Applies to: Clio Mk4 built May 2012 – July 2017 (412 cars)
Recalls apply to specific vehicles by VIN — a Renault dealer or the DVSA recall checker can confirm whether this car was included and whether the work has been done.

Ignition coils fail, causing misfires and poor running
A failing ignition coil makes the engine stumble, misfire and run roughly, and on the Clio Mk4 petrol it is a well-known fault. The coils sit on top of the engine and are cheap — around £40 each plus fitting — so a misfire is usually an inexpensive repair.
Applies to: Clio Mk4 (2012–2019) petrol; Parkers names the 1.2-litre
Parkers ties this to the 1.2-litre petrol; Auto Express does not name an engine. The '1.2' Clio covers both the non-turbo 1.2 16v and the 1.2 TCe 120 turbo, so this is shown for every petrol Clio Mk4.

Electrical glitches: wipers, dash display, windows, touchscreen
Intermittent electrical faults are among the most common complaints on this Clio — wipers, the digital instrument display, the electric windows and the touchscreen are the usual suspects. On a test drive, work every switch and watch for warning lights.
Applies to: Clio Mk4 (2012–2019)

Tyre-pressure sensors fail and need replacing
The wheel-mounted tyre-pressure monitoring sensors on this Clio are not very robust, and a failed sensor can only be replaced. On cars registered from 2012 a faulty TPMS is an MOT failure.

MOT failure rate: the Clio against vehicles its age
In our analysis of DVSA's anonymised MOT data for 2024 and 2025, 43.6% of 617,035 initial MOT tests on the Renault Clio failed at the first attempt — 38% more often than vehicles of the same ages and fuel types, which failed 31.5%.

Common questions
What are the most common Clio problems?
For cars built from 2012, the problems at least two independent publishers report include: 1.2 TCe / 1.2 DIG-T turbo petrol: high oil consumption; 1.5 dCi diesel: DPF clogging on short trips; 1.5 dCi diesel: timing belt failures, some before the due date; 1.5 dCi diesel: turbo failures; E-Tech full hybrid: electrical faults. Which apply depends on the generation and engine — they are listed generation by generation above, each with its sources.
Has the Clio been recalled?
Yes. DVSA lists recalls for the Clio built from 2012, shown above by generation. A recall covers a range of chassis numbers, so not every car is affected — check a specific car by VIN on GOV.UK, or by registration with our checker.
Does my Clio have these problems?
Not necessarily. These describe the model; many cars never have them, and a well-maintained car is less likely to. Enter your registration above to see the problems for your exact generation and engine, and whether DVSA records an outstanding recall on it. Whether a known problem was fixed is what a service history check shows.
Has this Clio had the work done?
A known problem matters far less on a car whose dealer records show it was fixed. A service history check returns the manufacturer's own dealership records for a specific car — and there's no charge if we find nothing.
Check a Renault service history
