Service History vs Car History Check: What Each One Covers
A car history check (also called a vehicle history or provenance check) tells you whether a used car has outstanding finance, has been written off by an insurer, or is recorded as stolen. A service history check tells you how the car was maintained. They are different products that cover different things. Here's exactly what each one does, and why the distinction matters when buying a used car.
What is a car history check?
A car history check is a background check on a used car's legal and financial status. It is run on the registration number and draws on records held by finance houses, insurers, the Police National Computer and the DVLA. Its job is to flag hidden risks you can't see by looking at the car or reading the advert. A typical check reports:
- Outstanding finance — whether money is still owed on the car under a hire purchase or PCP agreement. If it is, the finance company can reclaim the car, even after you've bought it. See the outstanding finance check.
- Insurance write-off status — whether an insurer has recorded the car as a total loss, and in which category (A, B, S or N). See the write-off check.
- Stolen marker — whether the car is recorded as stolen on the Police National Computer. See the stolen car check.
- Mileage discrepancies — a flag where the recorded mileage readings don't add up.
- Plate and colour changes, and previous keepers — the paper-trail details that can show a car isn't quite what the advert claims. See the number plate history check and the previous owners check.
What it won't tell you is how the car was looked after. A car history check is a status report, not a maintenance record: it doesn't show whether the car was serviced on schedule, which garages or dealers did the work, or whether major items such as the cambelt or brake fluid were ever done. That's the job of a service history check.

The service history check doesn't cover finance, write-offs or theft. Our separate Car check does. It uses data provided by Experian to show outstanding finance, insurance write-off category, police stolen reports, plate and colour changes, previous keepers and how often the motor trade has searched the car. It costs £8.00 added to a service history check, or £12.99 on its own. It comes with Experian's Data Guarantee (up to £10,000 for 12 months; Experian's terms apply). Finance and theft records change daily, so re-check on the day you buy.
Why car history checks don't include service history
Car history checks, including our own Car check, which uses data provided by Experian, draw on data from finance houses, the Police National Computer, insurance companies, and DVLA. These sources hold information about a vehicle's legal and financial status — but they do not have access to manufacturer dealership service records.
Manufacturer service records are held on each brand's own proprietary system. BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Toyota, and other manufacturers each maintain separate databases that record every service performed at their franchised dealer network. This data isn't shared with car history check providers.
That's where a specialist service like FindServiceHistory comes in — it retrieves records directly from manufacturer systems, with full dealer records for BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Ford, Toyota, Volkswagen and many more (see all supported brands).
Check a vehicle's service history
Retrieve official manufacturer dealership service records using just a registration number. Results typically arrive within minutes. Your card is authorised but not charged unless we find records.

When you need both checks
If you're buying a used car — particularly from a private seller — both checks address different risks:
- Car history check: Protects you from buying a car with outstanding finance (which the finance company can reclaim), that's been written off by an insurer, or that's been reported stolen.
- Service history check: Tells you whether the car has been maintained at manufacturer dealerships, whether the mileage at each service aligns with the seller's claims, and whether there are gaps in the maintenance record that could indicate neglect or increased repair risk.
A vehicle can come back from a car history check with a completely clean record and still have no service history at all. Equally, a car with a perfect dealer service record could have outstanding finance. The checks are independent.
What FindServiceHistory does differently
Our service history check focuses on one thing: retrieving official manufacturer dealership service records. It doesn't check finance, insurance status, or theft markers. For those we sell a separate Car check, using data provided by Experian, for £8.00 added to a service history check or £12.99 on its own. We focus on service history because that data is genuinely difficult for buyers to access independently, and it isn't part of the finance, theft and write-off data that vehicle history checks use.
What to expect from results
- Records show franchised dealer services only — independent garage work will not appear.
- Coverage varies by manufacturer — some brands have more detailed digital records than others. See our coverage by brand.
- If no manufacturer service records are found for the vehicle, your card is not charged. No records found does not mean the car was never serviced — it may have been maintained at independent garages.
For motor trade professionals
If you're appraising stock regularly, a trade account provides the same manufacturer service history data at £4.99 per check, with 3 free checks when you sign up. Many dealers use service history checks alongside a car history check to build a complete picture of each vehicle's history before buying at auction or part exchange.

Frequently asked questions
What is a car history check?
A car history check, also called a vehicle history check or a provenance check, is a background check on a used car's legal and financial status. It draws on records held by finance houses, insurers, the police and the DVLA to show whether the car has outstanding finance, has been written off by an insurer or is recorded as stolen, along with mileage discrepancy flags and plate and colour changes. It is a status report, not a maintenance record.
Does a car history check show service history?
No. A car history check covers finance agreements, insurance write-offs, stolen vehicle markers, and mileage discrepancies. Dealer service records are not part of it, so the servicing question needs a service history check of its own.
Is it worth running both checks on the same car?
If you're about to buy, usually yes, because they answer different questions. The car history check is about ownership and money: finance owed, a write-off, a theft marker. The service history check is about upkeep: which franchised dealers worked on the car, when, and at what mileage. One can come back clean while the other does not.
What does FindServiceHistory check that a car history check doesn't?
FindServiceHistory retrieves official manufacturer dealership service records — the dates, mileages, and types of service recorded when the vehicle was serviced at a franchised dealer. This data is not available through car history checks, and it is not part of our own Car check, which covers finance, stolen and write-off records using data provided by Experian.
Can a car have a clean history check but no service history?
Yes, and this is common. A vehicle can be completely clear of finance, theft markers, and write-off history while having no recorded dealer service history at all. The two checks are independent of each other.
