How VIN-level service history checks work
Every vehicle has a unique 17-character VIN. When a UK franchised dealer logs a service, it's saved against that VIN in the manufacturer's central system — not against the registration plate. That means the service history follows the car forever, even if the registration is changed.
For UK vehicles, the simplest way to look up VIN-level records is to use the registration. The DVLA links every UK reg to the underlying VIN, so we can resolve one to the other in the background and pull the manufacturer record.
Why the VIN matters more than the reg
- VIN survives registration changes (private plates, exports)
- VIN is the canonical identifier in manufacturer systems
- Service entries pre-date the current registration if the plate has changed
- Recall and warranty work is also tracked by VIN

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I check service history by VIN in the UK?
For UK vehicles, the DVLA-registered VIN links to the registration plate, and our lookup uses the registration to resolve to the same VIN-level manufacturer record. So in practice, entering the registration above performs a VIN-level service history lookup.
Where do I find the VIN on a UK car?
The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is a 17-character code typically printed on the lower edge of the windscreen on the driver's side, on a plate inside the driver's door frame, or stamped into the engine bay or chassis.
Why use VIN-level data?
Manufacturer service records are stored against the VIN, not the registration. This means the records follow the car for life — even if the registration changes. We resolve from reg to VIN automatically.
Can I check imported vehicles by VIN?
We cover UK-registered vehicles. Imported vehicles registered with the DVLA can be checked using their UK reg. Non-UK vehicles can't be checked through this service.
What if no VIN-level records are found?
If no manufacturer records exist for the VIN, your card is not charged. Older vehicles (pre-2012) and limited-coverage brands return fewer records.
