Recall: vacuum pump fault can cut brake assistance
Some Ceed, Stonic, Sportage and Optima models built 2018–2020 were recalled because a mesh filter in the tandem (vacuum) pump can block and starve it of oil. If the pump fails there is no brake servo assistance, so stopping takes more effort and distance. Dealers remove the filter and check the pump, replacing the pump and drive belt if damaged.
Applies to: Ceed Mk3, Sportage Mk4 and Optima built October 2018 – September 2020; Stonic built June 2019 – April 2020
The recall notice does not name the engine. Only cars in the recall VIN range are affected; a Kia dealer can check a VIN.

Recall: brake fluid contaminated by wrong top-up fluid
A batch of Ceeds and Sportages built 2019–2020 was recalled because the brake fluid may have been contaminated by topping up with the wrong fluid. Dealers replace the brake master cylinder and change the fluid.
Applies to: Ceed Mk3 and Sportage Mk4 built June 2019 – March 2020
Only cars in the recall's VIN range are affected. A Kia dealer can check a VIN and the work is free.

Recall: hybrid gearbox clutch actuator — fire risk
Niro hybrids and plug-ins (2015–2022) and Ceed plug-in hybrids (2019–2023) were recalled because the circuit board in the dual-clutch gearbox's hydraulic clutch actuator can be contaminated with fluid and short-circuit, in extreme cases causing an engine-bay fire while driving. Dealers check for fault codes, replace the actuator if needed and fit a lower-rated fuse. An earlier recall covered burrs in the actuator housing on 2016–2017 Niros.
Applies to: Niro Mk1 Hybrid and PHEV built October 2015 – June 2022; Ceed PHEV built November 2019 – August 2023
The e-Niro (electric) has no clutch actuator and is not included. Ceed PHEVs only — not petrol or diesel Ceeds. Only cars in the recall's VIN range are affected. A Kia dealer can check a VIN and the work is free.

Reported by owners and the motoring press
Problems at least two independent publishers report, that the maker has not acknowledged. They describe the model, not every car.
Nothing reported that met our bar of two independent publishers.
Measured at MOT: how a 2022 Ceed fails more often
Based on 12,171 first MOT tests of this model at 4 years old (cars first used 2020–2021), compared against every car of the same age and fuel.
Nothing stands out. No category fails clearly more often on this model than on cars of the same age and fuel.
How to read this
These are MOT outcomes for other cars of the same model, age and fuel — not a prediction about this one, and not a fault diagnosis. A high rate means the category is worth checking, not that this car has a problem.
A comparison is only shown where it survives its own margin of error. Where a model is only slightly above average, both rates are shown and no multiple is given, because the data cannot tell the difference.
MOT results reflect how a car has been used and maintained as much as the model itself. High mileage, short journeys and deferred servicing all show up here.

LED daytime running lights can fail or flicker
On the second-generation Cee'd, the LED daytime running lights are known to fail, and the headlights can flicker, usually in automatic mode. Owners have had the light units replaced under warranty; out of warranty a replacement headlight unit is a significant cost.
Applies to: Cee'd Mk2 (JD) hatchback and Sportswagon, 2012–2018
Applies to cars with LED daytime running lights; DVLA does not record the lighting specification.

The mesh filter inside the tandem pump may block causing insufficient oil supply and a risk of vacuum pump failure. If the pump fails there will be no vacuum assistance and the possibility of increased braking distance when applying the brake pedal.
Remedy: Remove the mesh filter and check the vacuum pump for damage if damaged replace the pump/drive belt.

MOT failure rate: the Ceed against vehicles its age
In our analysis of DVSA's anonymised MOT data for 2024 and 2025, 33.2% of 234,388 initial MOT tests on the Kia Ceed failed at the first attempt — 13% more often than vehicles of the same ages and fuel types, which failed 29.2%.
CeedCars of the same age and fuel (all makes)

These describe the model, not one car: how vehicles are used and maintained shows up as much as how they were built. Differences are the conservative end of a 95% confidence interval.

These describe the model, not one car. Plenty of cars never have the problems their model is known for, and a recall may already have been done on yours. Every problem links to its sources; a reported problem needs two independent publishers before we list it.

Common questions
What are the most common Ceed problems?
For cars built from 2012, the problems at least two independent publishers report include: LED daytime running lights can fail or flicker. Which apply depends on the generation and engine — they are listed generation by generation above, each with its sources.
Has the Ceed been recalled?
Yes. DVSA lists recalls for the Ceed built from 2012, shown above by generation. A recall covers a range of chassis numbers, so not every car is affected — check a specific car by VIN on GOV.UK, or by registration with our checker.
Does my Ceed have these problems?
Not necessarily. These describe the model; many cars never have them, and a well-maintained car is less likely to. Enter your registration above to see the problems for your exact generation and engine, and whether DVSA records an outstanding recall on it. Whether a known problem was fixed is what a service history check shows.
Has this Ceed had the work done?
A known problem matters far less on a car whose dealer records show it was fixed. A service history check returns the manufacturer's own dealership records for a specific car — and there's no charge if we find nothing.
