Fuse box power connector may not be fitted correctly (recall)
Audi recalled A3 and Q2 models built between 2020 and May 2023 because the electrical connector that feeds power to the fuse carrier inside the car may not have been installed correctly. A dealer checks the connection and secures it if needed, free of charge.
Applies to: A3 (Mk4) built March 2020 – May 2023 and Q2 built October 2020 – May 2023

Plug-in hybrid high-voltage fuse made incorrectly (recall)
Audi recalled A3 and Q3 plug-in hybrids built from late 2020 to February 2022 because the fuse in the high-voltage system may have been made with too little extinguishing sand. Dealers fit insulation above the battery's switching unit, free of charge.
Applies to: A3 (Mk4) and Q3 (Mk2) plug-in hybrids (TFSI e) built October 2020 – February 2022
Only the plug-in hybrid (TFSI e) versions. DVLA records some mild hybrids as hybrids too, so a mild-hybrid car may see this; it does not apply to them.

Infotainment and electrical faults
In What Car?'s owner survey the latest A3 had a high fault rate, with most problems concerning the infotainment and other electrical systems, plus engine warning lights. Almost all were fixed free under warranty, but cars often spent more than a week at the dealer.

7-speed dry-clutch DSG (DQ200): judder, clutch wear, mechatronic
The 7-speed DSG automatic with dry clutches, fitted behind the smaller petrol engines, is the DSG variant specialists see most. Owners notice judder or jerking when pulling away and at low speed, harsh or delayed changes, or a flashing gear display and limp mode. Causes are worn clutches, worst in stop-start town driving, or a failing mechatronic control unit; fixes range from a software update or clutch replacement to a mechatronic repair.
Applies to: VW Golf, Polo, T-Roc and T-Cross, Audi A1 and A3, SEAT Ibiza and Leon, Skoda Fabia and Octavia with the 7-speed dry-clutch DSG (DQ200), built from 2012
DVLA does not record the gearbox. This applies only to cars with the 7-speed dry-clutch DSG automatic (DQ200), usually paired with the smaller petrol engines — not manual cars, and not the 6-speed or heavier-duty wet-clutch DSGs.

If it has the VW Group EA888 1.8 / 2.0 TSI-TFSI petrol: 1.8 / 2.0 TSI-TFSI petrols (EA888): high oil consumption
The EA888 1.8 and 2.0 TSI/TFSI turbo petrols have a reputation for using more oil than normal; on earlier engines to about 2013 the cause is usually piston-ring wear, which can bring blue smoke and oily spark plugs. Owners of later GTI, S3 and A4 2.0 TFSI models also report high oil use. Check the level between services, because running low can damage the engine and timing chain; a bad case needs an engine rebuild with revised rings.
Applies to: VW Group EA888 1.8 / 2.0 TSI-TFSI petrol in the Audi A3, S3, A4, A5 and Q5 and VW Golf (incl. GTI)

Some A3s with the 1.4 TFSI petrol, mostly early cars, develop a rattle from the engine under acceleration. Both What Car? and Auto Express trace it to the rod on the turbo's wastegate actuator vibrating.
Applies to: Audi A3 Mk3 with the 1.4 TFSI petrol, built 2012–2020 (mostly early cars)

Measured at MOT: how a 2023 A3 fails more often
Based on 35,140 first MOT tests of this model at 3 years old (cars first used 2021–2022), compared against every car of the same age and fuel.
Nothing stands out. No category fails clearly more often on this model than on cars of the same age and fuel.
How to read this
These are MOT outcomes for other cars of the same model, age and fuel — not a prediction about this one, and not a fault diagnosis. A high rate means the category is worth checking, not that this car has a problem.
A comparison is only shown where it survives its own margin of error. Where a model is only slightly above average, both rates are shown and no multiple is given, because the data cannot tell the difference.
MOT results reflect how a car has been used and maintained as much as the model itself. High mileage, short journeys and deferred servicing all show up here.

Recall: camshaft adjuster pulley can break (2014 builds)
On a small number of cars built between December 2013 and late 2014, the housing bolts of the camshaft adjuster can work loose and the adjuster's belt pulley can break, which disrupts the engine's valve timing. Under the DVSA recall, dealers replace the camshaft adjuster.

About 2,000 UK cars across the four recalls, in specific VIN ranges. The recalls do not name the engine, so DVLA data cannot tell whether your car is one of them; a dealer or the DVSA recall check can.

Pop-up MMI screen creaks or sticks as it rises

Common questions
What are the most common A3 problems?
For cars built from 2012, the problems at least two independent publishers report include: Infotainment and electrical faults; 7-speed dry-clutch DSG (DQ200): judder, clutch wear, mechatronic; 1.8 / 2.0 TSI-TFSI petrols (EA888): high oil consumption; Audi A3 1.4 TFSI: rattle from the turbo wastegate actuator rod; Pop-up MMI screen creaks or sticks as it rises. Which apply depends on the generation and engine — they are listed generation by generation above, each with its sources.
Has the A3 been recalled?
Yes. DVSA lists recalls for the A3 built from 2012, shown above by generation. A recall covers a range of chassis numbers, so not every car is affected — check a specific car by VIN on GOV.UK, or by registration with our checker.
Does my A3 have these problems?
Not necessarily. These describe the model; many cars never have them, and a well-maintained car is less likely to. Enter your registration above to see the problems for your exact generation and engine, and whether DVSA records an outstanding recall on it. Whether a known problem was fixed is what a service history check shows.
Has this A3 had the work done?
A known problem matters far less on a car whose dealer records show it was fixed. A service history check returns the manufacturer's own dealership records for a specific car — and there's no charge if we find nothing.
