Recall: front seatbelts may not be anchored properly (2020–2021)
On some Leons and Cupra Formentors built between late September 2020 and August 2021, the front seatbelts may not have been secured properly at the factory. Dealers check the front belts and replace them where needed.
Applies to: SEAT Leon Mk4 and Cupra Formentor built 27 September 2020 – 10 August 2021 (R/2021/324)
Recalls cover a limited production run. A Cupra or SEAT dealer can confirm from the VIN whether this car was included and whether the work has been done.

Recall: plastic engine cover can work loose (2020–2022 builds)
On some Leons, Atecas, Tarracos and Formentors built between October 2020 and February 2022, the decorative plastic cover on top of the engine could come off its mountings over time, especially with hard driving or on rough roads. Dealers remove the cover.
Applies to: SEAT Leon Mk4, Ateca and Tarraco, Cupra Formentor and Ateca built 16 October 2020 – 14 February 2022 (R/2022/076)
Recalls cover a limited production run. A Cupra or SEAT dealer can confirm from the VIN whether this car was included and whether the work has been done.

Recall: plug-in hybrid high-voltage fuse may be faulty (2020–2021)
On some plug-in hybrid (e-Hybrid) Leons, Tarracos and Formentors built between December 2020 and October 2021, the fuse in the high-voltage system was made with too little of the sand that quenches an electrical arc. Dealers fit an insulating mat above the high-voltage battery's switching unit.
Applies to: Plug-in hybrid SEAT Leon Mk4 and Tarraco, and Cupra Formentor e-Hybrid, built 19 December 2020 – 21 October 2021 (R/2022/088)
Only the plug-in hybrid versions have this high-voltage system. A Cupra or SEAT dealer can confirm from the VIN whether this car was included and whether the work has been done.

Recall: airbag control unit wiring may be trapped by clutch pedal
On manual Leons built between April 2020 and June 2021 and manual Cupra Formentors built between November 2020 and June 2021, the wiring to the airbag control unit may have been caught by the clutch pedal on the production line and could be damaged. Dealers check the harness, secure it in the right place and repair any damage.
Applies to: SEAT Leon Mk4 (built 28 April 2020 – 17 June 2021) and Cupra Formentor (built 28 November 2020 – 18 June 2021) with a manual gearbox (R/2022/185)
The fault involves the clutch pedal, so it concerns manual-gearbox cars; DVLA does not record the gearbox. A Cupra or SEAT dealer can confirm from the VIN whether this car was included.

Infotainment screen glitches, freezes and failures
The touchscreen infotainment is the most common complaint on the fourth-generation Leon. Owners in What Car?'s survey report glitches, warning lights coming on for no clear reason and, in some cases, the system failing completely, sometimes needing several dealer visits. Check the screen responds properly and ask whether software updates have been done.

7-speed dry-clutch DSG (DQ200): judder, clutch wear, mechatronic
The 7-speed DSG automatic with dry clutches, fitted behind the smaller petrol engines, is the DSG variant specialists see most. Owners notice judder or jerking when pulling away and at low speed, harsh or delayed changes, or a flashing gear display and limp mode. Causes are worn clutches, worst in stop-start town driving, or a failing mechatronic control unit; fixes range from a software update or clutch replacement to a mechatronic repair.
Applies to: VW Golf, Polo, T-Roc and T-Cross, Audi A1 and A3, SEAT Ibiza and Leon, Skoda Fabia and Octavia with the 7-speed dry-clutch DSG (DQ200), built from 2012
DVLA does not record the gearbox. This applies only to cars with the 7-speed dry-clutch DSG automatic (DQ200), usually paired with the smaller petrol engines — not manual cars, and not the 6-speed or heavier-duty wet-clutch DSGs.

Measured at MOT: how a 2023 Leon fails more often
Based on 19,139 first MOT tests of this model at 3 years old (cars first used 2021–2022), compared against every car of the same age and fuel.
Nothing stands out. No category fails clearly more often on this model than on cars of the same age and fuel.
How to read this
These are MOT outcomes for other cars of the same model, age and fuel — not a prediction about this one, and not a fault diagnosis. A high rate means the category is worth checking, not that this car has a problem.
A comparison is only shown where it survives its own margin of error. Where a model is only slightly above average, both rates are shown and no multiple is given, because the data cannot tell the difference.
MOT results reflect how a car has been used and maintained as much as the model itself. High mileage, short journeys and deferred servicing all show up here.

Recall: rear child lock can switch itself off (2015–2016 builds)
On some Miis, Ibizas, Leons and Toledos built between late November 2015 and mid-April 2016, the manual child lock on a rear door could disengage without the driver knowing, so the door could be opened from inside. Dealers check the child locks and replace the door lock where needed.

Recall: no warning when an indicator bulb or lamp fails (2016–18)
On Leons and Atecas built between November 2016 and early July 2018, the car might not tell the driver when an indicator had failed, so a dead turn signal could go unnoticed. Dealers reprogram the body control unit.
Applies to: Leon Mk3 and Ateca built 1 November 2016 – 5 July 2018 (R/2019/356)

Recall: camshaft adjuster pulley can break (2014 builds)
On a small number of cars built between December 2013 and late 2014, the housing bolts of the camshaft adjuster can work loose and the adjuster's belt pulley can break, which disrupts the engine's valve timing. Under the DVSA recall, dealers replace the camshaft adjuster.
Applies to: VW Golf and Polo, SEAT Leon, Audi A3 and Skoda Octavia built December 2013 – December 2014 (R/2019/261, 262, 263, 283)
About 2,000 UK cars across the four recalls, in specific VIN ranges. The recalls do not name the engine, so DVLA data cannot tell whether your car is one of them; a dealer or the DVSA recall check can.

Water and condensation inside the rear light clusters
The seals on the third-generation Leon's rear light clusters are prone to letting water in, which shows as condensation inside the lens. Left alone it can make a rear light fail, which is an MOT failure. A replacement light unit costs around £120 (Parkers). Wash the car or look closely at the lenses before buying.

Common questions
What are the most common Leon problems?
For cars built from 2012, the problems at least two independent publishers report include: Infotainment screen glitches, freezes and failures; 7-speed dry-clutch DSG (DQ200): judder, clutch wear, mechatronic; Water and condensation inside the rear light clusters; Minor electrical faults. Which apply depends on the generation and engine — they are listed generation by generation above, each with its sources.
Has the Leon been recalled?
Yes. DVSA lists recalls for the Leon built from 2012, shown above by generation. A recall covers a range of chassis numbers, so not every car is affected — check a specific car by VIN on GOV.UK, or by registration with our checker.
Does my Leon have these problems?
Not necessarily. These describe the model; many cars never have them, and a well-maintained car is less likely to. Enter your registration above to see the problems for your exact generation and engine, and whether DVSA records an outstanding recall on it. Whether a known problem was fixed is what a service history check shows.
Has this Leon had the work done?
A known problem matters far less on a car whose dealer records show it was fixed. A service history check returns the manufacturer's own dealership records for a specific car — and there's no charge if we find nothing.
