Why the MOT history is worth reading
The MOT record is one of the most useful free documents on any used car. Beyond telling you when the next test is due, the year-by-year history is a paper trail of the car's condition: recurring advisories for the same fault, a sudden run of failures, or a gap where a test is missing all tell a story the seller might not. Reading it before you view a car saves wasted journeys.
The MOT also records the mileage at each test, which is why it doubles as a check against odometer tampering. Is this MOT check free?▾
Yes. It uses the official DVLA and DVSA databases, which are free — no signup, no payment. You get the vehicle's MOT status, its next due date, and the full test history including advisories and failures. The paid manufacturer service history is a separate product.
How do I find out when my MOT is due?▾
Enter your registration above. We show the MOT expiry date recorded on the official DVSA record — that's the date your current MOT runs out. You can be fined up to £1,000 for driving without a valid MOT, so it's worth checking before it lapses.
What's the difference between an advisory and a failure?▾
A failure means the car didn't pass and legally can't be driven until it's fixed and re-tested. An advisory is a warning — something the tester noticed that isn't a fail yet but is likely to become one, like a tyre wearing thin or brakes getting low. Repeated advisories on the same item across years are worth investigating before you buy.
Can I drive if my MOT has expired?▾
No — it's illegal to drive a car with an expired MOT on public roads, except to a pre-booked MOT test or a garage for repairs. If it's caught, you risk a fine and points, and your insurance may be invalidated. Check the expiry date here and book ahead.
Why doesn't my car have any MOT history?▾
Cars in Great Britain don't need their first MOT until they're three years old, so newer vehicles won't have any tests yet. Very recently registered or imported vehicles can also be missing from the DVSA record until their first test is logged.
Does the MOT history show if the car's been serviced?▾
No. The MOT confirms the car was roadworthy on the test date — it doesn't record dealer servicing, oil changes or scheduled maintenance.
