Recall: engine software can stop the battery charging
Faulty engine-control software could make the auto stop-start 'OFF' light blink and the stop-start system stop working; driven on in that state, the 12V battery is not charged, the lights can dim and the engine can stall and not restart. Dealers reprogramme the engine control unit.
Applies to: Baleno, Ignis and Swift Mk4 built February 2016 – November 2017 (6,313 cars)
Only cars in the recall's build window are affected, and most will have had the work done. A Suzuki dealer can check the VIN; recall work is free.

Recall: mild-hybrid starter-generator belt can snap
On SHVS mild-hybrid cars the integrated starter generator belt was not strong enough and could break. It also drives the water pump, so the charging light and then the coolant temperature warning come on, and the engine can stall and not restart. Dealers fit a new belt.
Applies to: Baleno, Ignis and Swift Mk4 with the SHVS mild hybrid, built September 2016 – March 2017 (2,247 cars)
Only SHVS mild-hybrid cars in the build window; DVLA does not reliably record a mild hybrid as a hybrid. A Suzuki dealer can check the VIN; recall work is free.
- Recall · Suzuki GBInterior
Recall: side airbags could fire when a rear door is slammed
Slamming a rear door could set off the side and curtain airbags and the seat-belt pretensioners. Dealers update the airbag control module software.
Applies to: Swift Mk4 built February 2017 – February 2019 (22,437 cars)
Only cars in the recall's build window are affected, and most will have had the work done. A Suzuki dealer can check the VIN; recall work is free.

Recall: brake vacuum pump check valve (loss of brake assistance)
The check valve in the brake vacuum pump was of an unsuitable design and material. Auto Express reports the effect as a possible loss of brake assistance (a heavy pedal), not of the brakes themselves. Dealers replace the check valve.
Applies to: Swift Mk4 built October 2017 – June 2019 and Swift Sport built January 2018 – December 2020
Only cars in the recall's build window are affected, and most will have had the work done. A Suzuki dealer can check the VIN; recall work is free.

Recall: steering wheel nut can loosen
The nut holding the steering wheel was not tightened enough; it can loosen, causing a knock or rattle, and in the worst case the wheel can come off its fitting. Dealers refit the wheel and tighten the nut to a higher torque.
Applies to: Ignis and Swift Mk4 built June – December 2022 (4,412 cars)
Only cars in the recall's build window are affected, and most will have had the work done. A Suzuki dealer can check the VIN; recall work is free.

Measured at MOT: how a 2021 Swift fails more often
Based on 19,986 first MOT tests of this model at 5 years old (cars first used 2019–2020), compared against every car of the same age and fuel.
Nothing stands out. No category fails clearly more often on this model than on cars of the same age and fuel.
How to read this
These are MOT outcomes for other cars of the same model, age and fuel — not a prediction about this one, and not a fault diagnosis. A high rate means the category is worth checking, not that this car has a problem.
A comparison is only shown where it survives its own margin of error. Where a model is only slightly above average, both rates are shown and no multiple is given, because the data cannot tell the difference.
MOT results reflect how a car has been used and maintained as much as the model itself. High mileage, short journeys and deferred servicing all show up here.

Swift Mk3 (incl. 1.6 Swift Sport) (2010–2017)
Acknowledged by the manufacturer
Recalls, extended warranties, compensation schemes, service actions and statements.
- Recall · Suzuki GBBrakes
Recall: brake pipe can rub on the engine mounting and leak
A brake pipe could vibrate against the engine mounting and, over time, wear through and leak fluid, reducing braking performance. Dealers fit a longer, re-routed pipe.
Applies to: Swift Mk3 (incl. Swift Sport) built in early 2013 (6,376 cars)
Only cars in the recall's build window are affected; DVSA's record and the trade press give different windows, so check with a Suzuki dealer, who can look up the VIN. Recall work is free.
- Recall · Suzuki GBCooling
Recall: water pump pulley bolts can work loose (overheating)
The bolts holding the pulley to the water pump could work loose and drop out, stopping the pump and letting the engine overheat, with possible engine damage. Dealers check the bolts and replace them, or the pump and drive belt if they had loosened.
Applies to: Swift Mk3 and Splash built September–November 2013 (1,568 cars)
Only cars in the recall's build window are affected, and most will have had the work done. A Suzuki dealer can check the VIN; recall work is free.
- Recall · Suzuki GBBrakes
Recall: rear brake calipers can leak fluid
The rear brake calipers may not have been made to specification, so their seals can let brake fluid leak and reduce braking efficiency; the brake fluid warning light comes on before the reservoir empties. Dealers replace the rear calipers.
Applies to: Swift Mk3 (incl. Swift Sport) built September 2014 – December 2015 (8,045 cars)
Only cars in the recall's build window are affected, and most will have had the work done. A Suzuki dealer can check the VIN; recall work is free.
- Recall · Suzuki GBSuspension
Recall: rear axle bolts can loosen or break
Some rear axle fixing bolts were mixed at the factory with bolts lacking their anti-friction coating; these could loosen, fall out or break, leaving the car undriveable. Dealers replace the rear axle bolts.
Applies to: Swift Mk3, SX4 S-Cross and Vitara built 29 October – 17 December 2015 (2,760 cars)
Only cars in the recall's build window are affected, and most will have had the work done. A Suzuki dealer can check the VIN; recall work is free.

Manual gearbox: clutch judder and notchy or noisy changes
A minority of these Swifts develop clutch judder, most noticeable in cold weather and usually cured with a new clutch plate. Some also have a notchy gearchange or a noisy manual gearbox, and second gear's synchromesh does not like being rushed; the Swift Sport is the version most often affected, and fresh gearbox oil can help. Both publishers describe it as uncommon rather than widespread.
Applies to: Swift Mk3 (2010–2017) with a manual gearbox, including the 1.6 Swift Sport
Applies to manual-gearbox cars only; DVLA does not tell us which gearbox a car has.

Due to incorrect software in the Engine Control Module (ECM) the ENG A-STOP (Engine Auto Stop Start System) OFF light may blink & the ENG A-STOP system may become inoperative. MOT failure rate: the Swift against vehicles its age
In our analysis of DVSA's anonymised MOT data for 2024 and 2025, 28.7% of 258,549 initial MOT tests on the Suzuki Swift failed at the first attempt — about as often as vehicles of the same ages and fuel types, which failed 28.5%.

These describe the model, not one car. Plenty of cars never have the problems their model is known for, and a recall may already have been done on yours. Every problem links to its sources; a reported problem needs two independent publishers before we list it.

Common questions
What are the most common Swift problems?
For cars built from 2012, the problems at least two independent publishers report include: Manual gearbox: clutch judder and notchy or noisy changes. Which apply depends on the generation and engine — they are listed generation by generation above, each with its sources.
Has the Swift been recalled?
Yes. DVSA lists recalls for the Swift built from 2012, shown above by generation. A recall covers a range of chassis numbers, so not every car is affected — check a specific car by VIN on GOV.UK, or by registration with our checker.
Does my Swift have these problems?
Not necessarily. These describe the model; many cars never have them, and a well-maintained car is less likely to. Enter your registration above to see the problems for your exact generation and engine, and whether DVSA records an outstanding recall on it. Whether a known problem was fixed is what a service history check shows.
Has this Swift had the work done?
A known problem matters far less on a car whose dealer records show it was fixed. A service history check returns the manufacturer's own dealership records for a specific car — and there's no charge if we find nothing.
