Recall: brake fluid reservoir can melt and leak
On some cars with the electromechanical brake servo and a DSG automatic, a heat shield mat may have been fitted wrongly, so the brake fluid reservoir can melt and leak fluid into the engine bay. Dealers check the mat and replace damaged parts.
Applies to: Golf Mk8, Passat B8 and Arteon with a DSG automatic, built March 2020 – August 2022
Only cars with the DSG automatic and the electromechanical brake servo; DVLA records neither. A dealer can confirm from the VIN.

Slow, freezing or failing touchscreen and software faults
The Mk8's touchscreen system can be slow to respond or stop working, and owners report warning messages and faults that took several dealer visits. Volkswagen's chief executive admitted mistakes with these systems, and VW released new software (and new hardware on later builds); earlier cars get a software update from a dealer. Check the car has had it.

7-speed dry-clutch DSG (DQ200): judder, clutch wear, mechatronic
The 7-speed DSG automatic with dry clutches, fitted behind the smaller petrol engines, is the DSG variant specialists see most. Owners notice judder or jerking when pulling away and at low speed, harsh or delayed changes, or a flashing gear display and limp mode. Causes are worn clutches, worst in stop-start town driving, or a failing mechatronic control unit; fixes range from a software update or clutch replacement to a mechatronic repair.
Applies to: VW Golf, Polo, T-Roc and T-Cross, Audi A1 and A3, SEAT Ibiza and Leon, Skoda Fabia and Octavia with the 7-speed dry-clutch DSG (DQ200), built from 2012
DVLA does not record the gearbox. This applies only to cars with the 7-speed dry-clutch DSG automatic (DQ200), usually paired with the smaller petrol engines — not manual cars, and not the 6-speed or heavier-duty wet-clutch DSGs.

If it has the VW Group EA888 1.8 / 2.0 TSI petrol: 1.8 / 2.0 TSI in Golf Mk7 and Octavia Mk3: timing chain stretch
Some Mk7 Golfs and Mk3 Octavias with the chain-driven 1.8 or 2.0 TSI petrol have suffered stretched timing chains or worn chain guides; on early Golfs most were fixed under warranty. The warning sign is a chattering or 'zinging' rattle for a second or two after a cold start, and a VW diagnostic check can measure chain stretch on high-mileage cars. Oil of the wrong grade or late oil changes make it worse, so a full service history matters.
Applies to: VW Golf Mk7 (2013–2020) and Skoda Octavia Mk3 (2013–2020) with the chain-driven 1.8 or 2.0 TSI petrol (incl. GTI, R and vRS)
The 1.0, 1.2, 1.4 and 1.5 TSI petrols in these models use a cambelt, not a chain, so this does not apply to them.

If it has the VW Group EA888 1.8 / 2.0 TSI-TFSI petrol: 1.8 / 2.0 TSI-TFSI petrols (EA888): high oil consumption
The EA888 1.8 and 2.0 TSI/TFSI turbo petrols have a reputation for using more oil than normal; on earlier engines to about 2013 the cause is usually piston-ring wear, which can bring blue smoke and oily spark plugs. Owners of later GTI, S3 and A4 2.0 TFSI models also report high oil use. Check the level between services, because running low can damage the engine and timing chain; a bad case needs an engine rebuild with revised rings.
Applies to: VW Group EA888 1.8 / 2.0 TSI-TFSI petrol in the Audi A3, S3, A4, A5 and Q5 and VW Golf (incl. GTI)

Measured at MOT: how a 2023 Golf fails more often
Based on 62,646 first MOT tests of this model at 3 years old (cars first used 2021–2022), compared against every car of the same age and fuel.
Nothing stands out. No category fails clearly more often on this model than on cars of the same age and fuel.
How to read this
These are MOT outcomes for other cars of the same model, age and fuel — not a prediction about this one, and not a fault diagnosis. A high rate means the category is worth checking, not that this car has a problem.
A comparison is only shown where it survives its own margin of error. Where a model is only slightly above average, both rates are shown and no multiple is given, because the data cannot tell the difference.
MOT results reflect how a car has been used and maintained as much as the model itself. High mileage, short journeys and deferred servicing all show up here.

Water can get in through the front doors on early cars
On early Mk7s, water can leak in through the front doors, leaving damp carpets near the sills (often the passenger footwell) and a mouldy smell. The cause is a cracked door speaker housing; the fix is new speakers and housings and drying the carpet. Distorted front speakers are another clue.

GTI)

Measured at MOT: how a 2011 Golf fails more often
Based on 81,328 first MOT tests of this model at 15 years old (cars first used 2009–2010), compared against every car of the same age and fuel.

MOT failure rate: the Golf against vehicles its age
In our analysis of DVSA's anonymised MOT data for 2024 and 2025, 25.8% of 1,731,732 initial MOT tests on the Volkswagen Golf failed at the first attempt — 15% less often than vehicles of the same ages and fuel types, which failed 30.5%.
GolfCars of the same age and fuel (all makes)
| Age | Tests | Bars | Golf | Same age & fuel | Difference |

These describe the model, not one car: how vehicles are used and maintained shows up as much as how they were built. Differences are the conservative end of a 95% confidence interval.

These describe the model, not one car. Plenty of cars never have the problems their model is known for, and a recall may already have been done on yours. Every problem links to its sources; a reported problem needs two independent publishers before we list it.

Common questions
What are the most common Golf problems?
For cars built from 2012, the problems at least two independent publishers report include: 7-speed dry-clutch DSG (DQ200): judder, clutch wear, mechatronic; 1.8 / 2.0 TSI in Golf Mk7 and Octavia Mk3: timing chain stretch; 1.8 / 2.0 TSI-TFSI petrols (EA888): high oil consumption; Front shock absorbers can leak and wear out early; Infotainment glitches and phone-pairing trouble. Which apply depends on the generation and engine — they are listed generation by generation above, each with its sources.
Has the Golf been recalled?
Yes. DVSA lists recalls for the Golf built from 2012, shown above by generation. A recall covers a range of chassis numbers, so not every car is affected — check a specific car by VIN on GOV.UK, or by registration with our checker.
Does my Golf have these problems?
Not necessarily. These describe the model; many cars never have them, and a well-maintained car is less likely to. Enter your registration above to see the problems for your exact generation and engine, and whether DVSA records an outstanding recall on it. Whether a known problem was fixed is what a service history check shows.
Has this Golf had the work done?
A known problem matters far less on a car whose dealer records show it was fixed. A service history check returns the manufacturer's own dealership records for a specific car — and there's no charge if we find nothing.
