THE UK INTERVAL IS NOT THE 105,000-MILE US ONE. Two independent UK sources reproducing the UK service book agree, era by era. TURBO: 45,000 mi / 36 months to 1999; 60,000 mi / 48 months on 2000 cars; 50,000 mi / 60 months on 2001-2005 cars (D service = A + Cambelt), with the note that 'some cars were issued with a service book showing the cambelt change at 60K'; 60,000 mi / 72 months on 2006-2007 cars (E service = Cambelt + C + plugs + brake fluid); and roughly 66,000 mi on 2008-on cars, where the cambelt sits immediately after the 60,000-mile C service in the order (S13, S7). NON-TURBO: 45,000 mi / 36 months to 2000, then '2001- Cambelt change now at 60000 miles' — 60,000 mi / 48 months on 2001-02 cars and 60,000 mi / 60 months on 2003-2007 cars, and an explicit 'Cam 66,000m Cambelt only' line on 2008-10 cars (S6). The figure recorded here is the shortest UK one, the 2001-2005 turbo case. NOTE THE DIRECTION OF TRAVEL IS NOT ONE-WAY: the turbo interval went 45k, up to 60k in 2000, back DOWN to 50k in 2001, up to 60k in 2006 and 66k in 2008. Subaru of America's figure for the same engines is 105,000 miles and a German-market Forester manual has been quoted at 160,000 km, so this item is heavily market-scoped. BELT-VS-CHAIN: control test applied — a Dayco cam belt (94621) is catalogued for 'ALL Subaru EJ20/EJ22/EJ25 engines' across every Impreza chassis code and no cam chain kit exists for the EJ (S15). Interference status could not be established from a manufacturer, dealer or parts-maker source and is left null; see unresolved.

THE CHANGEOVER. Subaru replaced the belt-driven EJ with the chain-driven FB from the 2011 model year, but the switch was model-by-model and ran to 2018 in the UK: the Impreza/XV took FB20 for 2012, the SJ Forester for 2013, the Legacy/Outback took FB25, and the WRX STI kept the belt-driven EJ257 until UK sales ended in 2018. A 2011-2013 car needs its engine code checked, not its year assumed. CAMSHAFT TEST (the strong one): the Subaru service-manual timing-chain procedure for the H4DO/FB20 times the chain to the intake and exhaust cam sprocket marks on each bank and to the crank sprocket, with per-bank guides and tensioners — the chain drives the camshafts (S10). CONTROL TEST: catalogues list a timing chain kit for FB20/FB25 and no timing belt at all (S16). No scheduled replacement interval is published.

CHAIN, and this one is easy to get wrong because the EE20 does carry a belt — the accessory/serpentine drive. CAMSHAFT TEST: the genuine Subaru timing kit for the EE20 pairs two timing chains (13143AA090) with the LEFT and RIGHT CAMSHAFT SPROCKETS (13024AA330 / 13024AA320) plus per-bank guides, tensioner levers and hydraulic tensioners — the chains drive the camshafts (S14). CONTROL TEST: no cam belt kit is catalogued against EE20 by any supplier found, and the UK diesel service schedule has no cambelt line of any kind, unlike every EJ-era schedule from the same specialist (S12, S14). No scheduled replacement interval is published; the chain is a life-of-engine item. Note the chain tensioners are a known EE20 failure point in service, but that is a repair, not an interval.

Same UK era table as the EJ20 — the belt interval tracks induction and model year, not capacity. Turbo: 50,000 mi / 60 months on 2001-2005 cars, 60,000 mi / 72 months on 2006-2007, about 66,000 mi from 2008 (the 'Cam' step sits straight after the 60,000-mile C service in the 2008-12 order). Non-turbo: 60,000 mi from 2001, 66,000 mi from 2008 (S13, S6, S7). A 2008-2018 WRX STI (EJ257) is therefore a 66,000-mile car, NOT a 105,000-mile one — the 105,000-mile figure is Subaru of America's. CONTROL TEST: the Dayco 94621 cam belt is catalogued for 'ALL Subaru EJ20/EJ22/EJ25 engines' and no EJ cam chain kit exists (S15). Interference status unresolved.

How Subaru records service data
Subaru UK has a small franchised dealer network (a few dozen dealers nationally). Records held against the VIN at franchised UK Subaru dealers include workshop visit date, mileage, service type, line items and dealer code. Coverage through our lookup is limited because of the small fleet size and the prevalence of independent specialist servicing — many Subaru owners use specialist tuners and independents (particularly for WRX / STI variants) whose records won't appear in the manufacturer system. Coverage is digital from approximately 2008 onwards for the modern Outback / Forester / XV era.

Subaru-specific things to know
Two Subaru-specific things to know: First, the EJ-series boxer engine (in WRX / STI 2005-2018) has well-known cylinder head gasket failure issues at high mileage — verifiable dealer service-interval discipline is the best mitigation. Second, the Lineartronic CVT automatic (in Outback, Forester, XV) has no fluid change on Subaru's normal schedule — the fluid is inspected at services and replacement is specified only for severe use — so any recorded CVT fluid check or change is worth seeing.
Why check Subaru service history before buying
Subaru resale value is sensitive to documented service history, particularly because Subarus are often used for high-mileage off-road / countryside applications where service neglect can be costly. WRX / STI collector models in particular need verifiable dealer history for premium pricing — partial / independent history can devalue these enthusiast cars significantly.
