CHAIN — the most counter-intuitive finding of this research: a 2.2-litre turbodiesel of this era is usually assumed to be belt-driven (as its smaller 1.6- and 2.0-litre MZ-CD/MZR-CD stablemates both are — see the 1.6 and 2.0 entries), but this is not so. Lymm Engine Parts (UK) sells a genuine-fitment 'Timing Chain Kit for Mazda 3, 6 & CX-7 2.2 MZR-CD - R2AA & R2BF' with a 112-link chain, a 62-link oil-pump chain and gears — no timing-belt equivalent exists for this engine code from any retailer searched. Corroborated by HJL Autoparts' identically-scoped kit. Mazda's later SKYACTIV-D 2.2 replacement (see that entry) is ALSO chain-driven, so the whole 2.2-litre diesel lineage has been chain-driven throughout, while the 2.0-litre diesel (RF) sitting alongside it in the very same cars used a belt.

How Mazda records service data
Mazda UK uses the Mazda Motor Europe dealer management system. Every franchised UK Mazda dealer visit is logged against the VIN with the service date, mileage, the service type (Annual / 12,500-mile cycle), itemised line items (engine oil, oil filter, air filter, pollen filter, brake fluid, spark plugs, coolant), the dealer code, and free-text remarks. UK Mazda records are reliably digital from approximately 2004 onwards. The MyMazda app (and the older MyMazda Connected Services on later models) shows recent services for newer cars; the dealer system holds the complete record. Records also include warranty work, software updates and recall completion. Mazda's Skyactiv engine family (G petrol, D diesel, X compression-ignition petrol) all use the same recording structure.

Mazda-specific things to know
Three Mazda-specific things to know: First, the 2.2 Skyactiv-D diesel (in CX-5, Mazda6, Mazda3 from 2012) has well-documented DPF and turbo issues on cars used predominantly for short urban trips — verifiable dealer DPF entries and oil-service discipline are critical. Second, the Skyactiv-X compression-ignition petrol (Mazda3 / CX-30, 2019 onwards) has very specific oil requirements (Mazda Genuine Engine Oil 0W-20 with Skyactiv-X spec) — verifying dealer-only oil services is reassuring. Third, MX-30 electric and rotary range-extender include high-voltage battery health checks as separate entries — the 8-year battery warranty depends on these.
