Ford service schedule by engine

Ford sets its service schedule per engine, not per model — so the oil interval, the timing belt or chain and the rest depend on what's under the bonnet. Below are the schedules for 30 Ford engines, each figure labelled with how firm it is and, where the manufacturer publishes it, linked to the document it came from.

Pick your engine for its schedule, or enter the registration and we'll match it for you.

Free · no signup · the engine size is on the logbook and usually on the back of the car

Ford servicing at a glance

Timing belt or chain
19 belt, 11 chain of 30 engines confirmed

Ford publishes a per-model interval table rather than one brand-wide figure, and it varies by model, engine and age. Many cars run an annual inspection with an interim service in between, commonly on a 12-month or 12,500-mile basis, but some models and later cars differ — check the schedule for the specific vehicle.

Some are group engines sold under more than one badge, and those say so. Where a line says manufacturer-published, it links to the source.

1.0 EcoBoost (Fox, revised 2018-on) 3-cyl with cylinder deactivation — cam CHAIN, oil pump still belt-in-oil

1.0-litre · petrol · 2018 on

Fitted to: Focus Mk4 (05/2018-), Fiesta Mk8 (from 2018 builds; earlier Mk8 cars are wet-belt), Puma (2019-) — all chain, EcoSport (2018-2022), Transit/Tourneo Connect and Courier (later 2018-on builds only)

Chain

Timing chain

No scheduled replacement

Reported · desk researchSource

Main cam drive is a chain on the cylinder-deactivation engine: Autocar Nov 2016 ('new camshaft chain', on sale 2018); Parkers 'switched to timing chains: late 2018 onwards'; TGPP model-by-model timeline (Fiesta 2018+, Focus mid-2018+, Puma all, EcoSport 2018+, Connect/Courier later runs; identify by turbo at rear of engine); Exact changeover is by build date and model, not one date — treat 2018-2019 as the transition window and verify by VIN/turbo position. No Ford document confirming the chain was fetchable (Ford media spec PDF returned 503 throughout). The oil pump remains driven by a small wet belt; no fixed replacement interval published (TGPP); Ford US recall late 2023/2024 for oil pump belt/tensioner on 2016-2022 US Focus/EcoSport 1.0 automatics (S17, S27). Re-sourced 2026-10-01: Laser Tools 8076 'gone is the oil wetted cambelt drive, as the latest design is chain driven… designed specifically for these post-2018 chain driven engines' (codes B3DA/B7DA, camshaft locking tools; W-S1), against the separate Laser 8239 wet-belt kit whose 1.0 engine codes do not overlap (W-S2) — but neither EcoSport nor Transit/Tourneo Courier appears in the chain kit's applications, while the wet-belt kit lists 'EcoSport (from 2014)' and Courier 2015-on (see report).

Reported · desk researchInterval revisedSource

Ford UK handbook interval as quoted by Haynes/PMM/Parkers: 10 years or 150,000 miles (Transit/Tourneo Connect & Courier 140,000 mi per PMM). The oil pump is driven by a second belt-in-oil; Ford US schedules replace 'timing belt' and 'oil pump drive belt' together. REVISION EVIDENCE: Ford's US Fiesta schedule changed from 'Every 150000 miles: Replace timing belt (1.0L, 1.6L). Replace oil pump drive belt' (MY2014, S11) to '1.0L: Every 100000 miles or 6 years, whichever occurs first' (MY2015, S9) and Focus MY2015 'Every 100000 miles: replace timing and oil pump belt (1.0L)' (S10). For the UK, Parkers' Fiesta guide (S18) and Dolz (S40) state Ford now recommends 10 years / 100,000 miles, and garages (S41) date this to c.2022 — but no Ford UK bulletin or document was found; treat the UK 100,000-mile figure as reported. CONTINUATION of the 1.0 EcoBoost wet-belt entry for three model lines whose changeover to the chain engine is NOT established. Laser Tools 8239, the wet-belt timing kit, lists EcoSport "from 2014", Transit/Tourneo Courier "2015-on" and Transit/Tourneo Custom 1.0 EcoBoost PHEV "2019-on", and its engine codes share none with the chain kit's B3DA/B7DA (W-S2) — while Laser's chain kit (8076) does not list these models at all (W-S1). Before this entry a 2020-on car of these lines got "chain" only, which is the dangerous direction: a wet-belt engine told it has a chain never gets its belt changed. Both answers now show until an engine-code check settles it. Interval as the parent entry. Opposite-kit test: AUTODOC lists timing belt kits for XPJA-XPJD / XYJA-XYJF with no banner, several described 'Timing belt in the oil bath' / 'Belt in Oil' (E-S16, E-S18), and shows 'Unfortunately, item Timing chain kit ... is not available' (E-S17). Camshaft test: Laser Tools 7828 is sold as the 'Engine Timing Kit - for 1.1 Wet Belt Ford Petrol' with camshaft locking blocks and a belt-tensioner locking tool, codes XPJA-XPJD and XYJA-XYJE (E-S19). Unlike the 1.0 EcoBoost, no source reports a later change to a chain (TGPP: 'the 1.1 Ti-VCT stuck with it', E-S20). Interval: TGPP reports Ford's recommendation as 'every 10 years or 100–125k miles' (E-S20) — only the 10-year element is recorded because the mileage is quoted as a range and no Ford document was found. Whether the 1.1, like the 1.0 Fox, has a second wet belt driving the oil pump was NOT established.

An INA kit is marked 'construction year to 03/2018', matching Parkers' end of sale for the 4-cylinder (E-S14). Camshaft test: the Sealey Duratec camshaft timing kit (E-S1) includes 'Ka (16-20)' in its applications alongside the belt-drive 1.25/1.4/1.6 Sigma codes, but YSKD/YSKE are not in its printed code table — supporting, not decisive. No kit is described as 'belt in oil', so recorded as a dry belt. No interval found on a fetched page: AUTODOC's '240,000 km / 10 years' appeared only in search snippets.

CORRECTED 2026-09-23: this entry read `belt` (dry). S46, a parts manufacturer's technical bulletin, lists the Ford 1.5 EcoBlue (Focus IV, Transit Connect, Kuga III; codes ZTGA/Z2GA/BEGA/ZTDA) in the PSA DV5 fitment table and states the family runs a Timing Belt IN OIL for the distribution plus a small camshaft chain. Calling it dry understates the oil-spec dependency, which is the whole failure mode of a wet belt. Interval evidence unchanged and still not a Ford UK figure: Ford figure for the 1.5/1.6 TDCi as quoted by Haynes: Fiesta Mk7 diesel 112,500 mi or 10 years; Focus Mk3 diesel 125,000 mi or 10 years (two different Ford figures, both recorded). Autobaak: Fiesta 1.5 TDCi 180,000 km / 10 yrs (~112,000 mi), consistent with the Fiesta figure. For the 2018-on '1.5 EcoBlue' badge no Ford UK figure was fetched (Autodoc pages quoting 180,000 km / 10 yrs returned 403). The 1.5 EcoBlue is a dry belt, not a belt-in-oil (no source describes it as wet; the wet-belt Ford diesel is the 2.0 EcoBlue). Interference not stated by a fetched source.

Timing chain — No scheduled replacement

Camshaft-to-camshaft chain, not the main drive. SUMAX give its expected life as 150,000 km (93,000 miles) but state a cylinder-head non-conformity makes it stretch or fail well before that. Recorded with no interval: an expected life is not a replacement schedule.

Split out of the existing Dragon entry so the Kuga can carry its own start year: the Dragon went into the Kuga only from 2019 (Laser Tools 8417: 'Kuga 2019-on', '3 cylinder engine with chain driven camshafts', E-S24), whereas the belt-driven 4-cyl 1.5 EcoBoost stayed in the Kuga Mk2 to 2019 (E-S26). Goes with the amendment to the Dragon entry and the Kuga Mk2 run-out addition. AUTODOC lists both belt and chain kits for a Focus Mk4 Y1DA (E-S25), so the retailer cannot decide; the Laser camshaft statement plus date-split febi chain kits are the evidence. Whether the Dragon also has a belt-in-oil OIL-PUMP drive was not established from a fetched source.

Vehicle Service Pros: the 2018 Dragon 3-cyl 'now equipped with a timing chain'; Search results (not fetchable — Ford media 503) describe the 2018 Focus spec sheet as 'chain driven with hydraulic tensioner' for both 1.0 and 1.5 EcoBoost, and the Dragon as having a belt-driven oil pump in the sump; the oil-pump-belt point could not be confirmed from a fetched source. No replacement interval published. Re-sourced 2026-10-01: Laser Tools 8417 'a 3 cylinder engine with chain driven camshafts… to safely remove and replace the camchain' (YZJA, Y2DA, Y1DA, YZDA, UNDA; W-S3) settles the camshaft test; AUTODOC lists 18 chain kits for the Focus IV 1.5 EcoBoost YZDA (W-S11) but ALSO 14 belt kits (22 mm CT881-type 4-cylinder kits, W-S12), so the opposite-kit test is inconclusive on AUTODOC alone.

AUTODOC lists belt kits (117 tooth, Gates 'Camshaft driven') for the Kuga Mk2 1.5 EcoBoost BNMA/BNMB/BNMC with production 2016-2019 (E-S26). The existing '1.5 EcoBoost 4-cyl (2014-2018)' entry stops at 2018, so a 2019-built Kuga Mk2 matched only the chain Dragon. Paired with the Kuga Mk3 Dragon entry (2019-), a 2019 Kuga will correctly read 'could be either'. Interval 10 yrs / 150,000 mi is copied from the existing 4-cyl entry (Vehicle Service Pros, US trade) — no new interval source was found in this batch; drop the figure if the orchestrator prefers not to carry it without its own source.

Belt-in-oil cam belt plus a belt-in-oil oil-pump belt (Dayco: 'the oil pump belt is always also changed along with the timing belt'). ORIGINAL Ford interval: 10 years or 240,000 km (150,000 mi) per Fleet News/City Auto Works; Hallcraft and Copthorne quote it as 10 years / 144,000 mi. REVISED by Ford General Service Bulletin 24-7042 (23 April 2024): 'Replace timing belt, tensioners and idlers at 6 years or 160,000 km (100,000 miles) - whichever comes first' for Transit, Transit Custom, Van and Tourneo built for Europe 2016-2023 (Fleet News 13 Aug 2024; Motorcare; Hallcraft; Palmers). Ford's stated reason: oil dilution from DPF regeneration. The bulletin as reported covers VANS only; whether the revised figure applies to Focus/Mondeo/Kuga/Galaxy/Ranger 2.0 EcoBlue is unresolved — JXL quotes 100,000 mi or 10 years for the Focus ST 2.0 EcoBlue. Ford UK itself publishes none of these figures on an open web page; the GSB was not fetchable. Interference not stated by a fetched source.

Camshaft test: Laser Tools 5901 is a VVT camshaft/engine timing kit 'designed specifically for the chain drive 2.0 and 2.3L direct injection petrol engines' and lists YVDA (E-S10). For the Focus ST Mk4 (N3DB) AUTODOC showed 'not available' on its chain categories and the belt test was not run, so ST Mk4 and Mustang rest on being the same 2.3 EcoBoost, not on their own catalogue test. No Ford 2261cc petrol is known to be belt-driven: Sealey files the earlier 2.3 Duratec HE (SEBA/SEWA) under chain too (E-S1). No replacement interval published.

Camshaft test: Sealey VS4387, a camshaft-locking timing kit headed 'Belt Drive', lists HYDA/HYDB/HYDC/JZDA/HUBA/HUWA with the Volvo B5254T codes (E-S6) — the Ford 2.5T is the Volvo five-cylinder, which volvo.json already carries as belt-driven. Interval: 10 years / 120,000 miles is JXL Performance's Focus ST Mk2 guide (E-S7, UK trade, reported); it also says 'check every 5 years or 60,000 miles'. JXL's km conversions are wrong, so the miles figure is taken as stated. The widely repeated '125,000 miles / 10 years' Ford figure was found only in search snippets and forums and is NOT used. Chain, both tests passed. OPPOSITE-KIT: for the Ranger TKE 3.2 TDCi 4x4 (SA2*), AUTODOC lists 42 timing-chain-kit articles with no banner (A2-S4) and the timing-belt category carries 'Unfortunately, item Timing belt ... is not available' (A2-S5). CAMSHAFT: Laser Tools' Ford 2.2/3.2 TDCi kit is for 'servicing the cam chain drive system' and lists Ranger 2011-on 3.2 TDCi (SA2*, SAFA, SAFB) and Transit 3.2 (A2-S3). The kits also carry a separate oil-pump chain (INA 559 1000 50 'full set with oil pump chain', A2-S4) — that chain drives the oil pump only, not a second camshaft drive. No Ford, dealer or parts-maker replacement interval was found; the chain is not a scheduled service item in any fetched source. (ford.json's own Autobaak aggregator note of 'chain, check after 10 years' is an inspection advisory from an unsourced aggregator, not a Ford interval, and is deliberately not repeated here.)

Every figure above is labelled with how firm it is, and manufacturer-published lines link to the document they came from. Intervals are set per engine and model year, and nobody has checked these against your individual car — treat them as a starting point and confirm against the handbook, the service plan, or a franchised dealer quoting the VIN before booking or skipping work.

Ford service schedule — FAQs

How often does a Ford need a service?

The oil-service intervals published for the 30 Ford engines we've researched are every 12 months or 12,500 miles (12 of 30 engines), and every 2 years or 18,000 miles (4 of 30 engines). Which one applies depends on the engine, the build date and the service regime the car was sold on, so pick your engine above for its own figure — then confirm it against the handbook or a franchised dealer quoting the VIN before booking or skipping a service.

Does my Ford have a timing belt or a chain?

It depends on the engine, not the model. Of the 30 Ford engines whose timing drive we've confirmed, 19 use a belt and 11 a chain. Find your engine in the list below, or enter the registration on our cambelt or chain checker.

How often should Ford brake fluid be changed?

Every 2 years on 20 of the 30 Ford engines we've researched. Brake fluid is a time-based item: it absorbs water as it ages, so it's due on the date even if the car has covered very few miles.

How do I check a used Ford was serviced to schedule?

Compare the schedule here with the car's actual service record. Our full service history check retrieves the manufacturer's own dealer records for one car — the dates, the mileage at each visit and the work done — so you can see whether the oil changes, brake fluid and cambelt were done when they were due. No records found means no charge.
