Volkswagen service schedule by engine
Volkswagen sets its service schedule per engine, not per model — so the oil interval, the timing belt or chain and the rest depend on what's under the bonnet. Below are the schedules for 28 Volkswagen engines, each figure labelled with how firm it is and, where the manufacturer publishes it, linked to the document it came from.
Pick your engine for its schedule, or enter the registration and we'll match it for you.
Free · no signup · the engine size is on the logbook and usually on the back of the car
Volkswagen servicing at a glance
- Engine oil & filter
- Every 12 months or 9,300 miles (17 of 28 engines)
- Every 2 years or 18,600 miles (17 of 28 engines)
- Brake fluid
- First at 3 years, then every 2 years (17 of 28 engines)
- Timing belt or chain
- 16 belt, 11 chain of 27 engines confirmed
Volkswagen runs two regimes, and which one applies is set per car. Fixed servicing is 12 months or around 9,300 miles; Longlife (variable) servicing runs up to 2 years or 19,000 miles. Longlife is not offered on every engine and requires the correct oil specification.
Volkswagen service intervals, engine by engine
Some are group engines sold under more than one badge, and those say so. Where a line says manufacturer-published, it links to the source.

Toothed BELT drives the camshaft. CAMSHAFT test: Sealey VSE2358 'Belt Drive' kit, 'camshaft and tensioner locking pins', 1.4D TDi PD codes AMF, BMS, BNM, BNV, BAY, BWB (C-S35). INTERVAL: Gates' 2007 bulletin of VAG OE intervals (C-S1; European, figures in km, no UK statement): VW 'AMF/ASZ/ATD/AXR/BAY/BLT/BNM/BNV 2004 -> 120.000' belt / '240.000' tensioner; Skoda 'FABIA 1.4 TDI AMF/BNM/BNV 120.000 120.000'; 'ROOMSTER 1.4 TDI BMS/BNM/BNV 120.000 240.000'; SEAT Ibiza/Cordoba 1.4 TDI PD '2004- 120.000 240.000'. 120,000 km converted = ~75,000 miles (miles figure is that conversion). No time limit is printed on these rows; the bulletin notes only a hot/cold-climate reduction 'from 5 to 4 years' for rows that carry one. END YEAR: not established from a fetched source — Sealey's model ranges run to 2014/2015 but cover other engines too; the EA288 1.4 TDI took over in 2014, and that engine is also belt-driven, so an overlap cannot give a wrong drive. Interference not stated.
1.4 TDI PD three-cylinder (Pumpe-Düse), built to 2003
1.4-litre · diesel · 1999–2003

Timing belt (cambelt)
Interval not confirmed — check the handbook
Toothed BELT drives the camshaft (which also works the unit injectors). CAMSHAFT test: Sealey's VSE2358 'Belt Drive' kit has 'camshaft and tensioner locking pins' for the 1.4D TDi Pumpe Duse, codes AMF, BMS, BNM, BNV, BAY, BWB (C-S35). INTERVAL: Gates' 2007 European bulletin of VAG OE intervals (C-S1, km) gives, for the Polo/Lupo/Fox 1.4 TDI: AMF/ANY/AYZ to model year 2000 — 60,000 km (~37,000 miles); 2001 onward — 90,000 km (~56,000 miles); AXR/BAY to 2003 — 90,000 km; SEAT Arosa AMF to chassis 6HY-017500 — 60,000 km, then 90,000 km to 2003. Because the figure changes with model year inside this window, miles is left null. No UK manufacturer figure found. Interference not stated.

Belt SOHC (R4, R13). Only figure found is a spec-site claim '120,000 km (75,000 mi) or 5 years' with interference design (R13) — unverified. Gates 2007 bulletin (P1) has no 1.6 8v row but gives 180,000 km / 5 years for contemporary EA113 2.0 FSI/TFSI and warns 5 -> 4 years in temperature extremes. Pre-2023 UK dealer practice 4-5 years (D6, D7).

2.0 TDI = Ford 2.0 EcoBlue (DXKA / DXKB / DXKD) — Transporter T7 and Amarok II — wet timing belt (+ wet oil-pump belt)
2.0-litre · diesel · 2022 on
Fitted to: Transporter T7 (Ford Transit Custom-based, 2025-on; 110/150/170 PS), Amarok II T1A/T1B (Ford Ranger-based, 2022-on)
Wet timing belt (runs in oil)
Replace every 6 years or 100,000 miles
IDENTITY: the T7 Transporter's 2.0 TDI is Ford's 2.0 EcoBlue — Parkers calls it 'Ford's ‘wet belt’ EcoBlue unit' in a 'rebadged second-generation Ford Transit Custom' (J-S1); a UK remanufacturer sells the 'VW transporter 2024 on' engine as codes DXKB/DXKD/DXWB and captions it a '2.0 EcoBlue diesel engine' (J-S4); a garage and a workshop say the same (J-S5, J-S6). Laser Tools lists its Ford 2.0 EcoBlue timing kit and split-gear kit as 'Also suitable for Volkswagen Amarok T1A/T1B (from 2022), engine codes: DXKA, DXKB & DXKD' with VW OEM tool equivalents (J-S2, J-S3), which ties the DXK* codes to the EcoBlue. VW's own release gives 110/150/170 PS but does not name the engine's origin (J-S11). DVLA reports the T7 at 1,996cc; Lymm lists the EcoBlue as '1995cc 1996cc' (J-S7). DRIVE: camshaft test — Laser 7323 pins the CAMSHAFT pulleys and then removes the belt: 'The belt can now be removed' (J-S2); the belt runs 'inside the oiled area of the engine' (J-S2), 'a ‘wet’ or belt in oil (BIO) system' (J-S8). A gear stage (crankshaft gear -> intermediate split gear carrying the belt sprocket) sits ahead of the belt (J-S2, J-S3); it is not a separate cam drive. Opposite-kit test — Lymm's EcoBlue range is belt kits only, no chain kit (J-S7). A second wet belt drives the oil pump and Dayco says it 'is always also changed along with the timing belt' (J-S8). INTERVAL IS FORD'S, NOT VW'S: Ford General Service Bulletin 24-7042 (23 April 2024) set 6 years or 160,000 km (100,000 mi), down from 10 years or 240,000 km (150,000 mi), for Ford Transit / Transit Custom / Tourneo built for Europe 2016-2023 (J-S9, J-S10). No VW-published belt interval for the T7 or Amarok II was found; whether VW applies the same figure is unverified. Dayco: Ford's interval is 'an absolute maximum' and belt failure has 'catastrophic consequences' (J-S8) — interference not stated outright, so left null. modelMatch is precautionary only: no other VW Group diesel is 1,995/1,996cc (VW's own 2.0 TDI is 1,968cc), so it can be dropped if preferred.
2.5 TDI PD five-cylinder (AXD / AXE / BNZ / BPC; Touareg BAC / BLK / BPD) — gear-driven camshaft
2.5-litre · diesel · 2003–2009
Fitted to: Transporter T5 2.5 TDI (to 2009), Touareg Mk1 2.5 R5 TDI
Gear-driven camshafts
No scheduled replacement
GEAR-driven — no cambelt and no timing chain. Laser Tools' 4771 timing kit is 'designed for gear driven engines' and states 'This engine is driven by Timing Gears', listing the Transporter and Touareg 2.5 TDI PD codes AXD, AXE, BNZ, BPC, BLJ, BAC, BLK and BPD (U-S6); it adds that timing gears 'are not normally considered part of the general service and need checking only if they are dismantled or become noisy'. Consistent with the opposite-kit picture found earlier (no genuine belt or chain catalogued for the AXD/AXE) and confirmed independently by the business's own van workshop. The Laser sheet brackets its applications '(05-09)'; the AXD/AXE codes are the 2003-on T5 engine, so the entry starts at the T5's launch. DVLA reports these at 2,460cc.

Four simplex roller chains at the rear of the engine; no replacement interval published; tensioner described as the weak point (R12). Interference status not stated in any fetched source. Re-sourced 2026-10-01: Laser Tools 4772 for the '2.7/3.0L TDi and TDi CR … chain driven diesel engine' with camshaft holding tools (ASB, BKN, BMK, BUN, CAPA…; W-S47), Laser 7588 for 2014-on codes (CRTC, CVMD, DCPC, DDXC…) 'all the timing tools required for chain removal' (W-S48), and a Lymm 3.0 TDI kit with 206- and 136-link chains (CDUC, CDUD, CJMA, CRCA…; W-S50), with AUTODOC chain kits for the A6 C6 ASB (87) and CDYA (48) (W-S51, W-S53) — but Laser 6849 is a 'Fuel Pump Drive Belt Kit' for 2007-2012 codes (CASA, CCWA, CDYA, CARA…; W-S49) and AUTODOC also lists 82/83-tooth toothed belt kits 'Driven Units: Injection pump' for the ASB and CDYA (W-S52, W-S54), so these engines also carry a separate toothed belt driving the high-pressure pump (no interval found).

Chains drive the camshafts; no replacement interval published. CAMSHAFT test: motor-car.net — 3.0 = '2995 cm³', 84.5 x 89.0 mm, 'four overhead camshafts driven by a timing chain', fitted to Audi A6/A7/A8 from 2017-18 and the 'VW Touareg III from 04/2018' (C-S25); Euro-AMP sells a '2 Timing Chains, 2 Tensioners, 4 Chain Guides' kit for S4/S5/SQ5/A6/A7/A8/Q7/Q8 3.0 EA839, 'Rear of Engine (Chain Driven System)', synchronising 'the crankshaft and camshafts' (C-S27). The Touareg eHybrid / R eHybrid PHEVs use the '3.0-litre, six-cylinder turbocharged' petrol engine (VW, C-S26); DVLA files them HYBRID ELECTRIC at 2995cc. hybrid is FALSE on purpose: the matcher only gates rows marked hybrid against non-hybrid cars, never the reverse (engineRowMatches: `if (row.hybridOnly && !row.mildHybrid && !v.hybrid) return false`), so one non-hybrid row reaches the petrol V6 and the plug-in alike, and a hybrid-only copy would add nothing but a duplicate answer. OVERLAP: 2016-2019 Audis at 2995cc also match the supercharged EA837 entry — both are chain-driven, so the timing answer agrees. Interference not stated. This is a VW-Group entry rather than a brands amendment to porsche.json's EA839 because that entry carries Porsche-published oil/plug/brake intervals.

Shared engine — also sold as Audi
Timing chain
No scheduled replacement
Chains drive the camshafts; no replacement interval published by any fetched source. CAMSHAFT test: the R8 V8 / RS5 kit contains a 'Main Timing Chain', 'Accessory Timing Chain', 'Bank 1 Timing Chain' and 'Bank 2 Timing Chain' — i.e. a separate chain to each bank's camshafts (C-S16); a four-chain kit is sold for codes BAR, BVJ, CAUA (A6, A8, Q7, S5, VW Touareg 4.2 V8), whose seller says 'timing chains stretch and guide rails fail at some point of this motor's life-cycle' (C-S15). OPPOSITE-KIT test: no timing-belt part surfaced for the 4.2 FSI in the catalogues searched. Do NOT confuse with the older 4.2 V8 40v (4,172cc, ANK/AQJ/ARS/ASG, 1998-2004) which Gates lists with a timing BELT (C-S1) — different capacity, so DVLA separates them. BNS (RS4 B7) is included on the strength of the shared 4,163cc FSI design; no fetched catalogue named BNS explicitly. Interference not stated.

Timing chain
No scheduled replacement
Chain-driven; no replacement interval published. OPPOSITE-KIT test (decisive): AUTODOC lists 33 timing CHAIN kits for the A8 D3 4.2 TDI (BVN) — e.g. 'Number of chains: 4', 'with chain tensioner, with slide rails' (C-S29) — while its timing BELT kit page for the same car says 'Unfortunately, item Timing belt kit for AUDI A8 (4E2, 4E8) 4.2 TDI quattro 240 KW is not available' (C-S30). CAMSHAFT test: Sealey's VSE6181 'Chain Drive' kit is for 'service work on timing chain, cylinder head, HP pump and engine timing' on the 4.2D TDi V8, codes BVN, CCFA, CCFC, CDSB, CKDA (C-S28). PORSCHE: the Cayenne Diesel S uses the '4,134cc V8 twin-turbo', 'Audi donated' (C-S31). Note Sealey's code list also includes CZAA/DHVA, which are the later 4.0 V8 TDI (different capacity, not this entry). Interference not stated.
EA111 1.2 MPI three-cylinder 6v / 12v (HTP: AWY, BMD, BBM, CHFA, AZQ, BME, BZG, CGPA, CGPB…) — timing chain
1.2-litre · petrol · 2002–2015
Fitted to: VW Polo 9N (2002-2009) and Polo 6R (2009-2014) 1.2 55/60/64/69/70 PS, VW Fox (2005-2012), SEAT Ibiza / Cordoba (2002-2015), Skoda Fabia (2002-2007), Fabia II (2007-2015), Roomster (2006-2012), Praktik (2009-2015)

NOT the 1,197cc 1.2 TSI: this is the naturally aspirated three-cylinder MPI (6-valve SOHC / 12-valve DOHC). CAMSHAFT TEST: Sealey's VSE5921 kit holds the camshaft for '1.2, 3-cylinder, 6 and 12 valve chain drive engines' and lists AWY, BBM, BMD, CHFA, CHFB (6v) and AZQ, BME, BXV, BZG, CEVA, CGPA, CGPB, CJLA (12v) (J-S20); ContiTech's procedure for the Polo 1.2 (BMD) locks the camshaft with OE T10120 and pulls 'the timing chain together with the camshaft sprocket', with a separate chain to the oil pump (J-S21, J-S22). OPPOSITE-KIT TEST: AUTODOC lists ~19 chain kits for the Polo 6R 1.2 CGPA/CGPB ('Driven Units: Camshaft', 130-link chain) and its belt-kit pages for both carry the 'Unfortunately, item Timing belt kit … is not available' banner (J-S23, J-S24); the Polo 9N 1.2 BZG and BBM have chain kits (118/130-link cam chain plus 66-link oil-pump chain) (J-S25). No manufacturer replacement interval found. LDS notes a change from a simplex to a duplex chain on 'Later 12v engines' (J-S26) — a running revision, dates not given. Chain wear: ContiTech says only, in general, that 'Timing chains can lengthen as their service life increases' (J-S21); no fetched allowed source states an engine-specific chain-stretch defect for this MPI engine, so none is claimed here. Capacity: catalogues give 1,198cc for the VW applications (DVLA reported 1,198 for a 2010 Polo) and 1,197cc for several Skoda/SEAT applications (J-S26) — the entry is held at 1,198 so it cannot collide with the 1,197cc TSI entries (see unresolved). Interference not stated by a fetched source.

OPPOSITE-KIT evidence added 2026-09-30: AUTODOC lists 190 timing chain kits for the Polo 1.2 TSI 105 CBZB (C-S50) against 3 chain items for the EA211 CJZC that replaced it (C-S49). Re-sourced 2026-10-01: Laser Tools 6858 for CBZA/CBZB/CBZC 'locks the crank and camshaft in their timed positions to enable the user to remove and replace the camchain' (W-S38), and AUTODOC's belt-kit page for the same Polo 6R 1.2 TSI CBZB reads 'Unfortunately, item Timing belt kit … is not available' (W-S39), completing the opposite-kit test against C-S50's 190 chain kits.

2015-ONLY CONTINUATION of the 'EA111 1.2 TSI' entry (items copied verbatim), gated with modelExclude so the POLO and FABIA — EA211 (belt) for all of 2015 — no longer match it. Polo: the facelifted Polo (6C) with the new 1.2 TSI 90/110 PS went on order April 2014 with deliveries from June 2014 (C-S47); AUTODOC lists the 6C 1.2 TSI 90 as CJZC (an EA211 code in this file) for 2014-2017 (C-S49) and the earlier Polo's 1.2 TSI 105 as CBZB (EA111) with 190 chain kits (C-S50). Fabia: Škoda UK dates the Mk2 '2007-2014' and the Mk3 (1.2 TSI 90/110) '2014-2021', UK sales from January 2015 (C-S48). Which of the remaining models really still used the EA111 in 2015 was not established model by model (see unresolved); they keep the both-candidates answer they had before. Original note: Roller chain, SOHC. No scheduled replacement published by any fetched source. Laser 6858 dates the CBZx engines '2009-2016' and lists Golf VI to 2015, Caddy, Touran, Yeti, Roomster, Rapid, Altea, Ibiza 6J and Toledo to 2015 and Jetta to 2018 — consistent with this 2015-only entry.

Toothed BELT from the crankshaft to the camshafts, with a short CHAIN linking the two camshafts. CAMSHAFT test: Sealey's VSE5909 tool kit is for 'belt tensioning 1.8 and 1.8 Turbo twin camshaft engines. These belt drive engines also have a chain connecting the two camshafts' (C-S3); Prorace sells a service kit for 'the cam-to-cam timing chain on VAG 1.8T 20v VVT-equipped engines' (C-S2). OPPOSITE-KIT test: both a belt kit and a chain kit exist, and the sources above say why — it is BOTH drives, not one mislabelled. INTERVAL: Gates' 2007 European bulletin of VAG OE intervals (C-S1, km, no UK statement) gives 180,000 km (~112,000 miles) with a 5-year limit for most codes (A3/TT/Golf IV/Octavia/Leon rows: AGN/AGU/AJQ/APP/APX/ARY/AUM/AUQ/AWT...), but 120,000 km (~75,000 miles) for earlier longitudinal A4/A6/Passat 1.8T codes (AEB/AJL/ANB/APU/AWT up to 2001) and for 'AMU/BAM 2001 ->' (TT/S3 225); 'reduced from 5 to 4 years' in hot or cold climates. UK independent TT specialist: 'Every 80,000 miles or 5 years (whichever comes first)' (C-S5). Only the 5-year limit is common to the sources, so miles is left null — the mileage depends on engine code and year (75,000-112,000 miles). INTERFERENCE: parts supplier's fitting guide: 'If you crank the engine over with the T-belt removed, you will bend valves.' (C-S4). NOTE: the same 1781cc capacity was also used by the older 8-valve 1.8 SOHC engine (e.g. pre-1999 Golf Mk3); that engine is belt-driven but has no cam-to-cam chain — see unresolved. YEARS: 1995-2009 is bounded by the Gates model-year column (earliest rows '-> 1997', latest 'BFB 2005-'), not by a UK document.
Also has a second drive
Timing chain — No scheduled replacement

Inspect at service — no fixed change interval published
IN SHORT: VW treats this belt as maintenance-free — its ElsaPro schedule lists no replacement, or a placeholder of 2048 / 160,000 miles (T7) — and asks only for inspection at services. That is not a lifetime guarantee. Independent specialists commonly replace it proactively at 60,000-100,000 miles (T16), and VW's own UK advice before July 2023 was every 4-5 years (D6, D7, D8); on an interference engine (T16) a planned belt change is far cheaper than a failed one. No engine-specific UK figure published. Audi UK range 80,000-140,000 (S7). VW ElsaPro reportedly lists the EA211 belt as 'maintenance free' / missing or 2048 & 160,000 miles for CHYA/CPGA/CHYB (T7). Pre-July-2023 UK practice: blanket 4-5 years (D6, D7, D8). Audi official non-UK: 1.0 TFSI 120,000 km (74,600 mi), no time limit (P5). Water pump is on a separate small belt, not the cambelt (P2, T8). Interference per T16 ('petrol 16-valve TSI') and T10 — reported, not manufacturer.

OPPOSITE-KIT test: AUTODOC lists 53 timing BELT kits for the Polo 6C 1.4 TDI CUSA, e.g. ContiTech CT1168WP2 water pump and timing belt kit for CUSA/CUSB/CUTA (C-S33), and exactly ONE 'timing chain' item whose function is not stated (C-S34) — one chain against 53 belt kits is the pattern of an auxiliary (oil-pump) chain, not a camshaft drive, but the page does not say which, so no secondary drive is recorded. Timing chain
No scheduled replacement
Chain drives the camshafts; no replacement interval published by any fetched source. CAMSHAFT test: Sealey's VSE4242 'Chain Drive' kit for the 1.8 TSi/TFSi codes carries the locking tools 'for both types of timing chain tensioner' and the camshaft control-valve tool (C-S6); Lymm sells a timing CHAIN kit with gears for BZB, 1798cc (C-S7). OPPOSITE-KIT test: AUTODOC lists 222 timing chain kits for the Octavia Mk2 1.8 TSI (C-S8) AND 20 'timing belt kits' (C-S9) — but every belt kit shown is a 'Water pump and timing belt kit' (ContiTech CT1143WP3, INA 530 0845 30), and the CT1143 is the 'toothed belt that connects the waterpump to the balance shaft' (C-S10). That small belt drives the water pump only, not the camshafts, so the 'both kits' result does not make this a belt engine. There is also a separate oil-pump chain (Sealey's kit includes 'a tool for the oil pump chain tensioner', C-S6). Interference status not stated by any fetched source for the 1.8. MODELS: only the Octavia Mk2 (2007-2013) and Superb Mk2 (2008-2015) 1.8 TSI are fitment-confirmed at 1798cc (C-S7); the other models are the 1.8-capable lines in Sealey's combined 1.8/2.0 application list (C-S6), and years 2007-2018 are bounded by those lists.

Every figure above is labelled with how firm it is, and manufacturer-published lines link to the document they came from. Intervals are set per engine and model year, and nobody has checked these against your individual car — treat them as a starting point and confirm against the handbook, the service plan, or a franchised dealer quoting the VIN before booking or skipping work.
Volkswagen service schedule — FAQs
How often does a Volkswagen need a service?
The oil-service intervals published for the 28 Volkswagen engines we've researched are every 12 months or 9,300 miles (17 of 28 engines), and every 2 years or 18,600 miles (17 of 28 engines). Which one applies depends on the engine, the build date and the service regime the car was sold on, so pick your engine above for its own figure — then confirm it against the handbook or a franchised dealer quoting the VIN before booking or skipping a service.
Does my Volkswagen have a timing belt or a chain?
It depends on the engine, not the model. Of the 27 Volkswagen engines whose timing drive we've confirmed, 16 use a belt and 11 a chain. Find your engine in the list below, or enter the registration on our cambelt or chain checker.
How often should Volkswagen brake fluid be changed?
First at 3 years, then every 2 years on 17 of the 28 Volkswagen engines we've researched. Brake fluid is a time-based item: it absorbs water as it ages, so it's due on the date even if the car has covered very few miles.
How do I check a used Volkswagen was serviced to schedule?
Compare the schedule here with the car's actual service record. Our full service history check retrieves the manufacturer's own dealer records for one car — the dates, the mileage at each visit and the work done — so you can see whether the oil changes, brake fluid and cambelt were done when they were due. No records found means no charge.
Check a Volkswagen's service history — £9.99
The manufacturer's own dealer records for one car, so you can see whether it kept to this schedule. No records found means no charge.
