Fuel mix of the vehicles tested: 80% petrol and 20% diesel. Mazda is 16 of 34 makes with 100,000+ tests, ranked from least to most often failing against same-age vehicles — see the full table.

Mazda MOT failure rate by age

Each age band compares Mazda vehicles with all vehicles of exactly the same ages and fuel types, so the difference is not just a matter of how old they are. Bands with fewer than 1,000 tests are left out.

Mazda MOT failure rates by model

Every Mazda model with at least 1,000 initial tests for a fuel type, most-tested first. “Same age & fuel” is the rate vehicles of the same ages and fuel types failed at; “Difference” is how far the model is from it.

Model names are as recorded at the MOT, grouped by us; a few are conversions built on a Mazda base vehicle. “Typical age” is the median age of the vehicles tested.

How to read these figures

  • They are MOT outcomes, not a reliability rating, and describe groups of vehicles — never one car.
  • How vehicles are used and maintained shows up as much as how they were built: vans, taxis and high-mileage fleet vehicles fail more often than second cars.
  • The comparison is with vehicles of the same age and fuel type, not the same mileage.
  • Differences are the conservative end of a 95% confidence interval. Full methodology.

Looking at one Mazda?

A model's average says nothing certain about one vehicle. Its own MOT history shows every test, the mileage at each and the faults found — free, from the registration.

Common questions

What percentage of Mazda vehicles fail their MOT?

In our analysis of DVSA's anonymised MOT data for 2024 and 2025, 28.3% of 1,011,871 initial MOT tests on Mazda vehicles failed at the first attempt — about as often as vehicles of the same age and fuel (29.5%). Because failure rates rise steeply with age, we compare with vehicles of the same age and fuel rather than with the overall average.

Which Mazda models fail their MOT least and most often?

Among Mazda models with at least 20,000 initial tests, and against vehicles of the same age and fuel: the MX-5 failed 24% less often (25.7% of 181,097 tests). The Bongo failed 19% more often (45.1% of 20,105 tests). These are MOT outcomes, which reflect how vehicles are used and maintained as well as how they are built — not a reliability rating.

How do I check a specific Mazda's MOT history?

These figures describe groups of vehicles, never one car. Our free MOT history check shows every MOT test on record for a registration, with the mileage at each test and the faults and advisories found.
